Is DOGE's emphasis on merit and efficiency more important than Veteran Preference?

The government uses Veterans preference when downsizing occurs. Should Veterans preference trump skills when your goal is to modernize the government?

Skills should trump all. Dan Crenshaw is proof that veterans can be despicable people.

With no link or example to work from... I'd say if the Veteran in question has the applicable skill, keep them.

If it is a DOD job not only should veterans preference be at the forefront , it should also be experience in that career field. Im so sick of getting people here that have no idea what to do.

That's obviously a given.

Sounds like DEI to me.

The vast majority of veterans that work for the government, are doing the same jobs they did in the military for the DOD.

As a Veteran, absolutely not!
Not sure if it happens this way, but I like to think that if you have 2 or more qualified individuals with no clear skillset that clearly identifies one above the other(s) that VA preference goes to the Vet.

When I was a kid my dad coached the local American Legion baseball team. One of post's officers who came to all the games said one time, "There are no bigger collection of bums than VA bums". Didn't know what he was talking about back then but it always stuck with me. As I got older, Mr. Andersen has been proven pretty much correct.
Merit over everything.
Merit over everything.

What if the non vet is more highly skilled? That was the premise of the OP.

I was in Combat Arms for over 20 years. I trained and fought with a lot of people. Some good, some bad.
I wouldnt hire any one of them to walk my dog just because they served. Some of the biggest losers I know were once in the military.

You asked about preference when downsizing occurs. I assume the veteran already has the job.

Military service doesn't automatically make someone a better or more qualified person. I served with some truly stupid people who were incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. I also served with some real assholes who I wouldn't hire to move a couch just because I wouldn't want to deal with them.

The majority of the DOD jobs you are not going to bring someone off the street and them be remotely close to as good as the military veteran that did the same jobs or same career path in the military.

Why would you think veterans don't have the skills for the jobs they are doing?

No
DIE is based upon race, religion, national origin, gender insanity, sexual preference, etc.
Veteran status is based upon performance.
Now, I advocate merit as the only bases of employment.
Now if you have 2 equally meritorious candidates, then give preference to the veteran. And I’m not a veteran.

Absolutely not. Veterans deserve respect and whatever government benefits they are entitled to by law.
They are not entitled to career federal jobs.
They are not entitled to career federal jobs.

I really doubt that DOGE makes that call. All they do is identify issues and provide that information to the people responsible for making decisions.

Depends.
Are the elevated skills required to perform the job to specifications?
If so, then go with the employee whose skillset is required.

All of us served with people like that but I have been GS for 15 years now and have had a few entitled brats who didn't serve in the military and never even seen a jet before. It did not go well. I have yet to see one last over a year. If i get a vet in here with aircraft experience then I rarely have to show them anything, they hit the ground running. Maybe in a different career field it may be different but not specific ones.
