Investigators say her mother, Crystal Canales, called 911 that afternoon to report her daughter was having trouble breathing. When officers arrived, they smelled something foul coming from Villegas’ bedroom and found her dead in a near-fetal position.
Medical personnel determined Villegas had been dead for at least six and possibly up to 24 hours. After closer examination, authorities discovered signs of severe malnutrition, multiple wounds and exposed bones on the victim’s body.

Serious question, and not excusing this behavior: From a strictly legal perspective, what is the care requirement for a parent to give to an adult?
It says the daughter was 19. Can the mother claim that the person was an adult and responsible for caring for herself?

No, but people with autism can generally provide basic care for themselves

There are many situations where families have to make them wards of the state because, as they age and grow, they become too hard to handle.
I have treated 18 year old autistic patients who cannot speak, can’t perform daily functions, etc.

Unpopular take - there was another local case of an adult with autism found “glued to a couch.” But - say you have a family member with disabilities or mental illness and you just can’t manage them. Maybe they are stronger than you. What can you then do? In this case and the couch case, it doesn’t appear the victims were restrained. What help is available?

They end up in group homes as wards of the state.

But, like, what can they do before this happens? What if they can’t even get the person into the car? “Institutions” got a bad name but it seems like things have gone to the other extreme. I’ve seen people in local Facebook groups post about people with mental illness who they can’t manage and they don’t know what to do. And if people do “institutionalize” their kid/sibling/parent there is a huge stigma.
