Edit. Colorado trip Ouray

Heading back to Colorado this summer to do some more hiking. This year we are going to explore the Maroon Bells and Gunnison Colorado area.
Thinking about staying in the Carbondale area in small cabin like place.
Gunnison may be in a small cabin in Montrose
Both cabin areas are base camps as we do plan on a couple overnight backpacking trips in each area
Any recommendations, better small places to stay etc?

Booked our stay for 7 days in Ouray. Maroon Bells was ok but we are getting more out the trip if we stay in Ouray the entire trip.
Will hike black canyon of gunnison. The rest we will hike in Ouray/Silverton. And telluride/Ophir.
Hope to back pack someplace but may be based off permit availability
Maybe we can take the Tahoe through Ophir pass but thinking of renting a jeep. Being a two days drive home, rather someone else’s vehicle on those trails. That’s if they allow it. Imogene pass would be another.
Black bear pass is not allowed for most rentals.
We have taken the Tahoe in the past up some sketchy areas but like I said being that far from home makes me a bit nervous.

Make your way to ouray, telluride and there are some great hikes in the passes between Durango and ouray…. Red mountain, coal bank and molas all have great hikes and one of the prettiest corners of the Rockies

could not agree more. Ouray may be my favorite town in CO. and you are a short drive from Telluride

we stayed in basalt the last time we were in the area and drove to the maroon bells trailhead. Obviously you know you’ll need to buy a pass on rec.gov
basalt is a cool town to visit even if you don’t stay there.

yeh the more we are looking Basalt may be the best base. I have the passes already.

Who knows, between now and July, I may move the Maroon Bells area out the trip and head towards Ouray and then up to Gunnison/Black Canyon

You may know this, but 4 pass loop area requires a permit for overnight trips, they aren't the easiest to get. If you don't have one there are still a million different things to do in the Aspen area that don't require a permit.

Drive Colorado 550 to Ouray. it is called the million dollar hiway and is worth

Ice Lake/Island Lake trail. A few miles outside of Silverton.
It’ll kick your arse if you aren’t in shape, but you get quite a bit of reward for the effort.

Gnar tacos in ridgeway is worth the stop if going to telluride. Butcher and baker and brown dog pizza (get the Detroit style) in telluride are both good. Tacos and beer and horsefly brewery in montrose are both solid choices. Black canyon of the Gunnison is worth the drive. If you have extra time,
Mesa verde National park is a good trip. It’s a big park and you’ll want to try to do a cliff dwelling tour or two. I’ve not done it, but the Durango/silverton railway would be on my list.

we’ve don’t this trip a few times. Happy to make recs depending on where you will visit. 11th street station in Durango for afternoon beer and food is great. Twin peaks lodge in Ouray is pretty cool and worth it for the springs. rent a sxs (can am, polaris, etc) in ouray and drive up imogene pass. way more fun than a jeep

We have a few good trails on our list for hiking. Maybe some overnights hikes if it works out. Bringing oour day packs and backpacking gear as well. Checking for permits.
Will probably rent a jeep for Imogene pass. Don't want use our Tahoe being two days away from home. We have taken it down some narrow roads across some creeks way back in the mountains in the past. Even drove up Mt Princeton to the Weather station. That was just a narrow drive. All of those would have been better in a rental

Ride the train - it's some of the most remote, beautiful scenery I've ever seen.
Reserve the Jeep rental ahead of time. When we went to Silverton, everything was already rented out when we arrived. Since we couldn't rent a Jeep, we ended up spending the day walking around Silverton. It's not that big of a place.
