One of the most famous photographs in American history was taken 80 years ago today...

February 23, 1945.
AP photojournalist Joe Rosenthal snapped this photograph of a group of U.S. Marines raising an American flag atop the summit of the recently captured Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima.
Most of you know the history surrounding this photograph so I won't get into it. For his trouble, however, Rosenthal would receive the Pulitzer Prize for what has become one of the most iconic photographs in world history.

EPIC FAIL sorry fellas, I'm old and computer illiterate. Was supposed to be the most famous/suppressed photo of all time of DJT pumping 'em up after taking one to the face.

Many you got a 4 timer in there. You better edit those for Iwo Jima stuff

It is one of the most iconic photos in history.
Do me a favor and post it in the "Pictures from days gone by" thread.

This vet used to post here and was there. I assume he’s no longer with us.

One of the most humbling places I’ve been. It was hot and miserable but no one complained once knowing what it was like hiking to to the top back in the 40s.

The only face visible in that photo, is a Navy Hospital Corpsman.

His last post in 2016 said he has a 26 year old daughter. Old man was getting some.

The first flag raising was done by the 2nd Battalion, 5th marines and was a 54x28 inch flag from their transport ship. The flag wasn’t large enough to be seen so it was replaced.
The flagpole used was a Japanese iron water pipe found on top of Suribachi.

True. It was the second flag hoisted that day, but the significance was unchanged.
This was Japan’s backyard. The blood the marines expended to put that flag is unchanged.

Even if you never wore the uniform, the Marine Corp War Monument at Arlington Nation Cemetary is very inspiring.

My granddaddy was not very far from that flag when it was raised

And this was still early in the overall Battle of Iwo Jima. There was a lot of fighting and dying left to go before the battle would be won.

Amen Jax. The hike from beach to top of Suribachi isn’t for the weak. Been there twice. Also, cave networks were a marvel of engineering.
