Playing off the other thread abt what SEC school one would go to. I hear Louisiana kids going to UGA, UT-Knox, Ole Miss…for UF being an upper echelon academic school I never hear of anyone going there.

Abt how hard is it to type the ou?

Apparently it’s very difficult to get into from out of state, regardless of test scores

Gainesville is pretty shitty

And if you did choose to go that far, why not just head for Duke, UVA, Notre Dame, Stanford.
I haven’t heard of many La. kids going to UGA. If they do, they might just be a legacy alum family.

My daughter went. The freshman class's high school GPA averaged 4.41 when she started. Good academic school but there's that whole Jorts Vegas thing.

ETA: Dammit, 21.

It depends on your debt and your major?

sounds on the low side with all of these weighted averages for kids these days

When did they start going over 4.0? Is this taking AP classes into account?

they go apeshit with all of those weighted averages, my daughter, no pics, went K-12 to Jupiter Christian in Jupiter, Fl, never made less than an A in any course, valedictorian, blah, blah, so I'm thinking, okay a 4.0 over 12 years, pretty cool, no, her average was like a 6.9 or some ridiculous number

The graduate programs and law school are supposed to be very good. I wouldn't want to go there because I imagine campus being like that movie which was pretty much a rip-off of Karate Kid, except the Florida movie is about MMA and the janitor/sensei is Djimon Hounsou.

That's a ridiculous number to associate with your daughter all right

An AP class is weighted at 5.0. T

He definitely blocked out what his daughter said after she said 69 and made up his own story

I have two degrees from UF. The dumbest people I met on campus were those that came in with the highest academic credentials and those that transferred from an Ivy. I was once asked to help a girl in the honors program with a research project. It was an absolute joke. But she was going to tell everyone on resumes that she did some honors research project thing in the honors program at UF, and people that don't know any better are clueless.
I was shocked how poorly prepared the Ivy people were (all of these were in grad school).
Smartest people I met came from Canada, community colleges, and middle of the road places.
The 'top tier' in academia is extremely large. If you go to East Main Street Polytechnic Institute, it won't be that great, generally. If you go to Texas, Tenner, Florida, Vandy, Miami, Michigan, UW, Ohio St and about 100 other good schools, the quality of your education will depend on two things - 1) how hard you work, and 2) the specifics of your major / program. When I was at UF, the area I was in was always looked at as being top 3 in the nation. Plenty of other areas at UF that were not highly regarded.
Undergrad at big schools is a rip off, though, and that is for all big schools. They want butts in seats and to milk you for student loans and book costs etc. They are not concerned about your education, with the exception of a few classes in upper division and then grad school.
UF was a better place when it competed for #1 party school in the nation. It's very snobby now. Gainesville / UF was once a pretty good combination. It's not that great these days. Every time UF calls me and asks for money I tell them we can talk as soon as they give me some refunds for all the times they ripped me off at the bookstore.
Traffic in Gainesville is absolutely stupid. When I lived in San Diego I could go from Coronado, across the bridge and over to La Jolla in the same amount of time it takes to go from campus down Univ Ave out to I-75. UF has grown constantly for almost 50 years now and none of that growth has been synchronized with Gainesville, the roads, housing, etc.

UF is a very good school according the world rankings. It’s also like $6k a year or something like that if in state, which is a steal in this day and age.
