due to Hurricane Francine damaging their power grid

BATON ROUGE — The Public Service Commission said Wednesday that Entergy can make its customers pay for $182 million in damage to its power grid during Hurricane Francine. The average customer will see their bill climb by about a dollar a month.

The utility had told the commission that last year's storm knocked out power to 250,000 customers after coming ashore last Sept. 11.

Paperwork filed with the PSC said the utility lost 1,000 power poles but that crews had the power back on within six days. When Hurricane Laura hit in 2020, parts of the state were without power for weeks.

Residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per month would see bills rise about 80 cents.

The PSC didn’t even do any of the research. They paid an out of state consulting firm $188,000 to research the fee.

It was supposed to take 6 months but magically only took 1. I guess the kickback deposits hit the right accounts sooner than they thought.

Do more northern state Entergy customers have an added Ida fee?

I'm on the inside and the PSC just rubber stamps whatever Entergy wants. There needs to be an uprising on the PSC

Does Entergy budget anything for storm repair or are the citizens just an insurance policy with no deductible?

Well, the Baton Rouge Commissioner claims that he voted "NO"

quote:

Today I voted no on an @EntergyLA request to charge a storm recovery fee for Hurricane Francine. The interim fee passed, but I feel it was premature. We need due process when making decisions for 1.1 million customers. Read my full statement here: bit.ly/FrancineStormRecovery

But then got the boot from our Governor when he called him "an a-hole"

quote:

he Public Service Commission votes to strip Davante Lewis of his vice chairmanship and install Eric Skrmetta into that role. The vote was three to two, right down party lines. The move comes after Lewis directed vulgar language towards Governor Landry on social media. During public comment prior to the vote, liberal activist Melissa Flournoy says Lewis’ social media post was no reason to strip him of his leadership role.

“If we believe in democracy, if we believe in the private speech of individuals on social media, this is not a cause to remove the vice chair,” Flournoy said.

Lewis defended himself, saying he was not going to apologize for his remarks.

“So whatever actions are taken today, I’m okay with. I’m good. Because I know I stand on a solid rock. All of this is sinking sand to me,” Lewis said.

Lewis, who is the lone black member on the PSC, said stripping him of his leadership role reeks of racism.

“If you’re young. If you’re black. If you’re outspoken, you’ve got to do whatever the white man tells you to do,” Lewis said.

Chairman Mike Francis said the decision to hold a vote to strip Lewis of his leadership role was his and his alone.

Lewis used an expletive towards Landry in response to the governor posting on “X” that new Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy was a major upgrade over his predecessor from the Biden administration.

I believe Davante, he actually wants to help the people he represents and not just rubber stamp everything Entergy wants.

The Francine fee would vary for each Entergy Louisiana customer based on their monthly electricity use. Entergy estimates it would amount to roughly $1.10 per month for an average home that uses 1,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 80 cents monthly for a home that uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours.

WTF are we crying over $1 in this day and age?

I think it's usually a 3-2 or 4-1 vote in Entergy's favor. Former vice-chair Lewis is the only one who consistently votes no.

They’re a utility that (theoretically) gets a guaranteed profit margin in exchange for government oversight. Any storm repair “budget” would be built into the rates anyway, which would be even less transparent.

The problem isn’t necessarily that storm repair charges get tacked on to our bills. The problem is that, at least from the outside looking in, the PSC doesn’t seem to actually challenge Entergy on anything. Entergy is entitled to reclaim storm repair costs but there should be a high level of scrutiny in the process.

It’s not just $1. My last Entergy bill had a $47 storm restoration fee from storms in 2012. I was still in college then. Not to mention customers just finished paying off Katrina/Rita fees a few years ago.

It’s the principle. And it isn’t just $1. We are still paying $20 in fees from hurricanes years ago.

quote:

Entergy Louisiana customers are still paying recovery fees for Hurricane Isaac in 2012, Laura, Delta and Zeta in 2020, and Winter Storm Uri and Hurricane Ida in 2021.

Together, those charges add up to roughly $20 per month for a home that uses 1,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity
