Only traditional king cakes with cinnamon, cream, or fruit filling, sugar frosting and sprinkles should be called king cakes.

"Caramel Macchiato" with a whipped cream topping, caramel syrup and pecans on top is not a real king cake. Coconut cream pie is not a real king cake. These can be tasty in their own right, but they are just king cake shaped desserts.

What says the OT?

As an aside, boudin is also not a king cake, regardless of how much I might eat one brought in to the break room.

Sprinkles on it aren't king cake to me. It has to be colored granulated sugar

Honestly, coach... don't really care. Seems like the name has adapted over time.

idk, I had a Dulce de Leche king cake a couple weeks ago that was fire.

However, I concur that it was awesome, but non-traditional "king cake"

This is like saying "Any king cake with a baby is a fake. The originals had a bean."

quote:

In the Middle Ages, it was said that the king who was chosen had to pay the assembly a general round of drinks. To prevent cheating, the edible bean was replaced by a porcelain bean

If Heavenly Donuts king cakes are wrong then I don't want to be right.

Meh, I prefer the latter but close enough to still be a King Cake with the former.

I’m hoping now that Valentine's day has passed, HEB will be stocking up on king cakes.

And why are King Cakes in Metro Baton Rouge so dense? Is no one capable of making a fluffy bread.

Same related problem with PoBoy bread, it's not done right in BR.

Totally agree, and not the crystal looking colored sugar. The fine colored sugar is the original.

Some people say it's too dry, but this is still my favorite, the original, no cinnamon, no white icing.
Tastee Donuts bought McKenzie's recipes.

I love king cakes, yes some are better than others in BR, but if I have any family from NO coming my way, I'll ask them to bring a good one up.

It’s a cinnamon roll. The filling, icing, and colors were just added on to make it look fancy.

Don’t turn this into something it’s not

I say that if the only kind of king cakes made are the traditional kind, it won’t be long before king cakes are a thing of the past. Traditional king cakes suck….
