I will be using my Granddad's 30-06 for deer hunting next year. Anyone have recommendations for ammo?

It has not been shot in over 50 to 60 years so I had a gunsmith go over it and do a thorough cleaning. He said it is basically in new condition and rarely been fired.

Anything with a picture of a deer on the box.

I like the federal premium nickel case ammo for jamomatics. In my mind, they feed easier.

The cheapest ammo you can find. 30.06 is extremely forgiving. Unless you're shooting over 200+ yards, stick with the cheapest, most available ammo. A low neck shot with a 30.06 is an off switch, never had one take a step.

I occasionally use my handed down “jam master” and she likes Remington Core Lokt 150 grain.

I’ve killed a shite ton of deer with that gun and that round.

I bought a box of Herter's soft points last year for my uncle's Enfield. They shot well and the box was $24. My dad's 742 cycled them well, too.

I keep my ‘65 Woodsmaster oiled down with CRC 3-36 and 150 grain hornady SST. No issues with jamming with the sharp pointed plastic tipped bullets and slick as owl shite oil on it. Hope you get a rack with the old auto!

180 grain that groups well. You won’t know what it likes until you shoot it.

For occasional hunting any reputable commercial hunting ammo should do. Rem core-lock etc.

Stay away from hot loads. The receivers are known to get beaten up by them.

I have one and shoot 150 Grain Corelock.

Best gun I've ever owned, mine has a Redfield 4 power scope on it and has been dead on for 20 years.

I've killed 50+ deer with mine and only had one get away that I hit, and I think I hit it in the leg.

I am looking forward to shooting and hunting with this rifle. I have been using a Marlin 30-30 with great success but can now hunt areas where more range is needed. I had a scope rail installed and now looking for the right scope.

Not sure. I have not bought or even shopped a scope in a very long time. Going to do some research and decide make a decision based on a combination of value and quality/specs. I am getting older and I need a scope that can help with my eyesight lol.

I plan to start shooting mine again next season. I shoot 150 grain core lokts and an leupold rifleman. Doesn’t group worth a shite but I’ve killed the hell out of deer with it. Got a couple bolt guns that shoot paper a lot better but I’ve missed a few animals the last few years with them.

“jam master”

When I was 15 I missed a damn monster with a drop tine with my dad's 742. It ran towards me in the woods and stopped about 40 yards from me. I went to shoot again and it had jammed. Still sick about it 21 years later.

It was probably a 120" deer in reality but every time I think about it it's gotten bigger. It's close to 200" now.

You are asking the right questions. And no matter what anyone tells you that rifle is a straight up deer slayer inside of two hundred yards.

After numerous lost bucks with a ruger American 6.5 cripple more, I bought the 1978 version Remington of the woodsmaster 742. I purchased it on gun broker from a pawn shop in rural Missouri. The first time I took it out I hammer an 11 point and it drops without moving a muscle. FYI I shoot Norma whitetail 150 grain bullets!
