Everyone says we need Free Trade. We never had Free Trade to begin with. Stop with the Free Trade BS when VAT exists.

Why is a VAT important to trade? Isn’t the VAT applied to all transactions whether foreign or domestic product?

VAT is sales tax, which applies to everything, just like sales tax here. Granted, Europe’s sales tax is high, but it’s just a sales tax.

I've pointed this out more than once here only to have smooth brains say it's not a tariff.

It acts as one on imports from a non VAT country.

Trump is right to include it.

I have no idea how it works, but I've ordered clothing from the UK before and they take the VAT off when I put in a US shipping address.

I would not be shocked to find out these countries are not being honest. After we saw what type of Fraud is going on with USAID I would not be shocked to learn that the VAT is only being collected on foreign goods and not domestic. Essentially it would be a tariff then

I had no problem shipping and receiving IT hardware between my employer's various sites in US, CAN, EU. In 2017, Trump pissed off some people so we had to start paying duties and VAT on our own fricking equipment we were sending out to our own sites for deployment. We had to hire a fricking customs broker. I hope Trump breaks those bastards.

As an example;

Germany has a 19% VAT. Until the other day, they also had a 10% tariff on US goods.

If you buy a Corvette in Germany you pay both the tariff and VAT.

Germany lowering it's tariff to 2.5% on US imports sounds good until you realize Franz is still paying over 20% to import his new ZR1 to blitz the Nürburgring.

Domestically made German products have VAT offsets that lower the hit as they calculate productions costs. Imports pay the full 19%.

It’s much more comprehensive than what we think of as a sales tax. I have a house in England. Every month I get an invoice from the House Management Company and it has 15% VAT added. When a plumber, or any other tradesman, makes a service call VAT is added. And when I bought the house I paid a 15% tax on the full price of the home, which I believe was a VAT. The VAT hits just about everything bought by everyone, whereas our sales taxes generally just get the final step when a product is sold to a consumer. And many things are exempt.

Those people are taxed to paralyses.

How is it far for a country that charges us 18% for a product they receive from us and we charge only 2.5% for the same damn product from them?

Anyone who thinks that is even remotely fair, is a moron.

Navarro just pointed out that the German government allows their automakers to rebate the VAT on export cars and gave an example.

$50K Cadillac would have a 10% tariff making it $55k, then the VAT is calculated which brings it to $65k in Germany.

$50k BMW made in Germany and exported to the US would have a 2.5% tariff bringing it to $51k but then Germany takes the VAT off leaving the sticker price at $42K.

That's a $23K difference on cars with the same price in their home markets.

I wait to buy most luxury purses until we are in Europe. Not only are the prices cheaper but they refund the VAT. Usually around 40% cheaper.

The high tax on diesel fuel pretty much does the exact same thing as VAT.

It’s not that different in the US. Many states charge sales tax on services, it just varies.

The US combined sales tax is 2.5% of GDP. The UK VAT tax is over 6% of their GDP. That's a lot different.
