Anyone have experience skiing in Europe and have any tips/recommendations?

I am not a skier and have only skied once.
Austria should have a resort that fits your abilities.
St. Anton, Ischgl, Kitzbuhel, Fieberbrunn/Saalbach

I am not a skier and have never skied in Europe, but I have been to some European ski resorts. The most prominent one among expert skiers I have been to was Zermatt, Switzerland. From the town you take cable cars up to various levels of the Klein Matterhorn which is the Little Matterhorn, the mountain next to and overlooking the Matterhorn. We spent a morning and afternoon up there watching the skiers zoom down the slopes. That was also some of the most incredible scenery I have ever seen.
The skiing there is for the most accomplished of experts It is not for beginners.

People say its "cheaper" and I have spent 0 time looking into it. That would honestly shock me. I'm not even including flights here, but if we are being honest I think I paid $600 round trip to fly to Salt Lake last Spring Break and you can probably get flights into Milan, Munich, etc. for not much more than that since the winter is the slow season generally speaking for Europe.
But I'd assume lodging is a lot? Food can't be any cheaper?
Lift tickets? I don't know.
I'm strongly considering this in the mid term future also. I'm considering doing something like flying into Milan, skiing for a couple of days, then training to central Italy for a couple of days. I'm not sure I can get a full Europe flights worth just skiing.

Lift tickets in Austria are WAY cheaper than US resorts. This is the factor that makes Euro ski trips much cheaper. Look at Kitzbuhel lift passes in peak season. LINK
Food and drink are comparable to the US if not a bit cheaper.
Lodging depends greatly on where you are staying.
Flights are probably $500 more.

So looks like $63/ day compared to $100-150? That’s 1/2 price but there’s 4-5 things that go into the price of a ski trip and that’s really only one of 5. Gear rental? Lodging, flights, etc.
Don’t get me wrong it seems reasonable for sure.

I've looked into it a few times and have come to one major conclusion. For me, it's not worth it for a skit trip but would make sense to plan a trip and ski while I was there when skiing was not the priority.

Travel time?! Or expense of the skiing?

I can speak to Austria....let me know what questions you have....
Either I or family have done the following locations:
Ischgl - my personal favorite
Mayrhofen - skews younger but fun time
Kitzbuhel area
St Anton
When we go there, we fly into Munich and then either take a pre arranged bus or drive to those cities.
I always rent skis over there as frankly great service, especially intersport ski rental. They fit you, they have great quality, etc..
The hotels there all have packages that when i first went, I was like this seems crazy but they do it so well. This includes breakfast and dinner and some tea times.
The apres ski is a lot of German schlager musich which is fun plus the normal hits.
I love it...

Not the expense of skiing but a trip like that is harder to put a group together and the additional travel time is less time skiing. I'd rather do other things on that trip, rent ski gear as opposed to bringing my own and not make skiiing a priority.
I am not looking for the cheapest way to ski and I'm not looking to use skiing as a way to see other countries. To me, I see it like I do golf. There are trips that I go on where its fun to play golf and then there are golf trips. Europe is more of a place I would ski when there but would not want to focus a trip there to ski (same for Japan).

I’ve only skied (or snowboarded, rather) in Europe.
Without the comparison I am lacking to make the fully informed claim, but it’s pretty great over here.
I finally made it out to St. Anton this year and can’t recommend it enough. It’s considered one of the “snow safe” resorts in Austria alongside the likes of Serfaus, Mayerhofen, Iscghl, Stubai and Sölden all of which are among Austria’s top resorts.
For Italy, anywhere in the Sella Ronda circuit is great.
Chamonix in France is a good bet as is Zermatt in Switzerland.
Overall on bang for buck and quality of pistes, Austria is very hard to beat.
