US surveillance King Air went down a couple days ago. There’s a Facebook video of the crash but I don’t know how to link it. No idea what caused the crash yet.

The military has issues, for sure, and Hegseth appears to be all over them, but if you fly enough missions in small planes it's just a numbers game.

A king air is a pretty solid plane. I've flown in one many times. I wonder what happened.

I’ve heard rumors of weather being a factor but we’ll probably never really know. There’s a Facebook video of the crash that I don’t know how to link. It looks like both wingtips had been detached from the plane and the pilots were struggling to keep it in the air.

Excuse my ignorance on military matter, but Is it normal for three defense contractors to be going on routine surveillance missions on foreign soil?

Yes. AFSOC flies a lot of them too but I don't know the ratio of which one is used more.

I don’t know the exact ratio but in my experience a very healthy majority of ISR is flown by civilian contractors with AFSOC or other military assets coming for more dedicated and specific operations. But the routine stuff is mostly done by contractors.

I'm guessing this was not a routine flight. Unless there was a training piece.
Two tragedies here, the loss of life of course and the fact an E5 is at the point on a mission that should at a minimum be manned by a senior enlisted, Warrant or JO.
My son is involved in one of these operations south of the border (there are many) and they are out of uniformed (Army) personnel to man these missions. Just a year ago the minimum rank for these types of flights would have been a senior E7 or a W02.
Kids in the 18-25 range just dont join the military anymore and the ones that do arent smart enough to make through the intel school house/DLI and/or they cant get a clearance. The minimum clearance for this type of mission is TS-SCI with polygraph. Not a stretch that most uniform intel gathering and analysis will be done by DoD civilians sooner than later..
My son is going in the Reserves, will move one desk over at the TOC and make 3 times what he makes now.

I've only seen polygraphs used when they were looking for a specific leak, and they were used on people who already had their clearance. They're not part of the background check in my experience.

I think this was a pretty routine mission although I don’t know anything for certain. I actually knew both of the pilots. On most of our missions the military rider was E-4 to E-6ish. I don’t know what this guys particular clearance was but mine was TS-SCI without a pilot.
