Just acquired this rifle, intend to make it my deer gun although I’m not really familiar with the caliber. Thoughts?
Also would welcome suggestions for a decent optic. Hunting primarily white tail in N LA and E Texas. TIA

It’s pretty close to a .270 ballistically which isn’t a bad thing for whitetail. Will push a few grains more at the same velos

I’d slap a VX5 on it.

It’s a magical 6.5. Did you find ammo or do you reload?

Budget?

The rifle and caliber are both fine. Once you decide what ammo you like stock up on it. Don't see 264 wm on the shelf all that much anymore.

Second the VX5, have them on three rifles and it's perfect. Also look at the Ziess Conquest line. Japanese glass and made in Germany, good quality at reasonable price point where/how you want to hunt

Much better than 6.5 PRC for hunting. A PRC can't reach the same velocities.

That’s good. Keep your brass.

I need to take up reloading, although most of my other firearms are common and relatively inexpensive to shoot

Keep your brass either way, somewhat organized and decently stored. Not like it goes bad. You may decide to start reloading one day, or get a friend to for you. Once fired brass out of your rifle cuts down on the start up cost significantly.

Definitely keep your brass. That may be the only way to get ammo in the future.

Someone commented that it is close to a 270 Win. Energy and velocity wise it is closer to a 7 Mag. Essentially it is a 6.5 mm Mag

What condition is the bore in? Has the rifle had a lot of rounds through it?

I’m firmly in the guns are tools camp, nothing wrong with using it for what it was made for, but there’s a good chance what you have there is more valuable to a collector than to you as a daily driver deer rifle. I don’t think many 700s were made in 264wm. Awesome cartridge that was way ahead of its time but ammo is going to be really hard to come by, and reloading it is going to come with some challenges. I’d be tempted to get what I could for it and buy something more suited for dragging around in the woods and shooting more than a couple rounds a year, assuming it’s just another rifle to you.

Pending on your budget check out a Vortex. There warranty is very hard to beat.
