Having a new custom shower installed and I am trying to figure out what shower head to install. I want som sort of handheld combo. Anyone have any suggestions of a nic setup that they are very satisfied with. There are so many choices out there, it is overwhelming.

Get a separate sprayer installed with its own valve. They're very common these days.

I like the European ones with solid sliders , exposed pipes, and two knobs. Haven’t seen one like it North America but they’re everywhere over there. If just a head kit, I like the ones with tiny levers to make changing spray patterns less of a chore.

I recently bought a $80 head/handheld unit and it's working as well as I could hope. I wouldn't go overboard. Just because it costs more doesn't equate to better.
This is the one I got.

We got a Moen Magnetix that we've been happy with. A part broke (not due to build quality) and when I messaged them asking if I could buy just that part, they sent me an entire new kit for the hassle.

Pardon my ignorance, but do you have an example? Will i need 2 valves or is it possible to have one valve with a 2 way shut off?

I went the 2 head route.
I have a fixed shower head in the usual spot, and then next to it is a hand sprayer mounted a little lower that I can pick up and use to rinse off.
I have the normal control valve (on/off, cold/hot) and then above it is another valve to open and close either faucet. (vertical for regular head/horizontal for hand spray)
I love it, and was able to have it during original construction so it wasn't a problem at all

Something like this. You have one main valve that supplies the head and sprayer and another valve to activate the sprayer. Most main valves already come with the 2 outlets. A plumber can easily install this setup for a minimal increase in cost.

these diverter valve setups are actually pretty expensive compared to a big box option. install shouldn't be much more, though. I did a remodel myself (precovid) and paid something around $1500-2k for the whole delta setup iirc. some of that is the fixtures we chose, however. but just know the high quality stuff is priced accordingly.

remove the water flow restrictor from the shower head for more pressure

we have the Moen Exact temp system. can have up to three separate fixtures with its own volume control with a single temp control. everything is rock solid heavy duty brass. we have the hand sprayer on a vert bar and a Delta shower head. The Speakman (no flow restrictor) felt like a firehose so had to downgrade to Delta

As Whiskey Throttle pointed out, I have that one from Lowe’s and it is perfectly fine!

There's only one right answer when it comes to bathroom shower systems, it's SPEAKMAN. Get the 2.5 GPM and you wont regret it.

Last year I bought one for a relative that had the normal handheld unit, but you could also mount it to a vertical bar to use as a regular shower. It turned out to be a pretty slick setup.
I boughs\T it from Wayfair which has a hell of a selection. Upon ordering, they also have a checkbox that allows you to search for “open box” which are basically returns. The positive is that you can get one hell of a deal on open box models. That is important, because showerheads can get very pricey.
