Always loved it, all the cream cheese and other fillings have corrupted king cakes.

Growing up in 1970's New Orleans, I will agree 100%!!
Does anyone have that original recipe?
TIA

Traditional king cakes are pure fricking garbage. Every one of them are dry, cardboardy cinnamon rolls. They taste like shite, and the only time I ever eat them is when I'm at work and need a sugar fix.

Totally agree
Excess white frosting and too many fillings offsets the sugar / dough ratio

If you're going to stuff your face with sugar/fat/flour, there's a lot better tasting ways of doing that than fricking King cake.

I really don’t understand how people like the cream cheese icing from dong phung. Doesn’t seem to mix with a king cake taste at all, but hey different strokes I guess

Perfect for suicide if you eat that dry arse thing with no liquid around.

Sure do!!!
Find some 3 day-old French bread.
Sprinkle some tepid tapwater on top.
Get some purple, green, and gold sugar, and shake that on top of the damp, stale bread.
Stick a plastic baby in the loaf somewhere.
Brew up some good old chicory coffee.
Enjoy!

I agree frick all this BS they have now. Thats not traditional king cakes that you had to buy in school in the 80s when you were the one who got the baby. All this stuffed, iced, fruit shite is not a true king cake!!
Mckenzies king cakes ruled!! I was telling my kids this shite last week

It's not an edgy, hot take. King cakes are generally terrible and as far as crawfish go, I boil them all the time and they're good, but look at what you have to do to those things to make them edible. It's food that crawls out of a frickin' mud puddle. Of course it's overrated.

I can see you've never eaten one. Kid

I was drinkin' at Nick's on Hardy 40 years ago, and doing the night shift @ WHSY.
Those old king cakes were tuuuurible.
Paul's Pastry fixed that.

I don't remember anyone in my family preferring McKenzie's to Randazzo's, except my grandmother. Now this was back in either the late 70's or early 80's, but she used to have to put a little pat of butter on that dry arse King Cake, like it was a dinner roll, just to get it down.
