When’s the last time Will Ferrell was in a truly great movie?

He’s one of my all time favorites, his movies in the early-mid 2000’s are classics

When is the last time he made a truly funny movie?

The Campaign was in 2012, is that his last great movie? 13 years ago?!?!?!?

Am I just getting old and lame?

He’s really a physical comedian mixed in with some shock humor and that’s hard to sustain. He did it for a long time though, speaks to how good he was.

i'll also throw some affection towards Daddy's Home and the sequel.

Also Lego Movie and Barbie.

knock Barbie for a million different things but i was entertained.

He's lost leading man comedic status, I would agree with that.

Sad to say it’s been over a decade.

Not my definition of great. I would say The Other Guys.

oh i agree. Except for Lego Movie, none that i mentioned are great. Just that he doesn't have ALL misses.

And I'm not an overt fan of his, even during his hot stretch.

my actual favorite movie with him is Stranger than Fiction.

Definitely his best movie IMO, but it’s also one of my GOAT comedies. He really did have some massively awesome movies though
Old School
Anchor Man
Zoolander
Taledega Nights
Step Brothers
The Other Guys
Semi-Pro
The Campaign

He also had small parts in a bunch of other great movies like Wedding Crashers

His new movie with Reese Witherspoon 'You're Cordially Invited' came out today on Prime. I was wanting to watch it. Has anyone seen it yet? I thought it looked funny at least

Personally I'd throw in Blades of Glory in that list. It's not as well liked but man I love that movie. Very quotable.

Blades of Glory is just behind The Other Guys for me. It's highly underrated, and Jenna Fischer was still hot in it.

I don't dislike the Daddy's Home movies, but they're not classics by any stretch.

To answer OP, Other Guys has to be the answer.

I’ve never found his shtick to be entertaining outside of smaller or supporting roles. He’s almost too much as the main character.

Talladega Nights was the only movie I enjoyed where he was the center character of a movie.

His career was probably petering out anyway, but comedies died at the box office in general. There are almost 0 true 100% comedies these days.

Ferrell has been doing the same schtick his entire career, but I think the oversaturation of "it's so dumb it's funny" comedy is wearing thin. Throw in the overall damage to comedy by wokedom and Ferrell is probably going to be getting paid mostly for doing commercials from now on. The Other Guys is probably the last good comedy he did. Elf was the last top shelf movie he headlined.

I don’t think you know what this term means if you’re trying to apply it to Will Ferrell.

Not a movie, but maybe Eastbound and Down. So like 12 years ago.
