Whenever LSU does hire a new basketball coach, this should be the first call

T.J. Otzelberger, Iowa State Cyclones
It's simply remarkable what Otzelberger has done since arriving in Ames in 2021 -- so maybe this shouldn't be a surprise. He's led the Cyclones to two Sweet 16 appearances in three seasons, including last year's 29-win campaign. And this season features his best team yet, a group that has a real chance to go to the program's first Final Four since 1944 and win its first Big 12 regular-season title since 2001. The Cyclones were ranked in the top five in the preseason, but have kept pace with Auburn and Duke at the top of the rankings through the first three months of the campaign despite not having a projected NBA draft pick.

He just signed a contract extension through 2032 last month. Not sure if they ever released what his salary would be for that contract but before the extension he was making $2.5 million per year. The question would be what the terms of his buyout would be for a contract that long and if LSU would be willing to foot the bill to pay for it. He's a damn good coach though and would be a solid hire I just dont see LSU ever ponying up to pay big bucks for a proven coach like that

It’s probably more of a lateral move. He’s already making about the same as McMahon.
He is a midwestern guy, coaching in the Midwest. I don’t think we could lure him away for the amount we should be paying him. If that makes sense.

He has a contract through 2032 and I would imagine a buyout we are not interested in paying on top of McMahon's

If he did leave it would for be a much bigger job than LSU.

He’s really good but unlike football there are a lot of really good college basketball coaches out there and McMahon makes more than over 300 of them so again unlike football this isn’t as hard as we are led to believe.

He's a great coach no doubt but I don't think he has any incentive to leave while he is already paid pretty well.
There's some good coaches in the Big 12 that haven't been interested in that kind of move.

You misspelled Will Wade

John Brady before Will Wade
At least he's been to a Final Four

In terms of the resources of the athletic department it's a big step up. In terms of the prioritization of the program within the athletic dept it's a big step down.

Give it to Shaq, he's been a Great Ambassador for LSU and he's financially secure so he won't have to use his wife's checkbook

This is where we’re stupid at LSU. The investment it would take to hire someone like that and build facilities akin to Auburn and the like is cheaper than constantly hiring bargain bin coaches and losing revenue with poor teams but for some reason we’re last to the party on what everyone else is having success doing. Our problem is negligence more than anything else.

It's hard to see LSU being able to poach a good power conf. HC without being willing to invest a massive amount of money. With the contract for Kelly in football I just don't see LSU willing to do that right now. And to be fair, I don't know how many would be realistically available. I doubt any of the big name HC's from the Big 12 would make a move. Maybe you could grab someone from the ACC, but no one really excites you there.
We'll get it out of the way. The OBVIOUS choice would be for all to reconcile and re-hire Wade. He's won everywhere he's been and it would be the least risky hire of all. You've seen him win AT LSU. After that, you are dealing with the crapshoot of mid-major HCs (unless you want to hire a major conf. assistant coach). It's a crapshoot because those mid-major guys lose their best players year after year so it's hard to have consistency. Two names that would potentially be in play are Bob Richey at Furman and Bucky McMillian at Samford. The downside is Richey is a South Carolina lifer and doesn't seem overly interested in leaving Furman. McMillian is a Birmingham guy and what he has done at Samford has been really good. But is he ready to make the jump to a major conf.? He went from Mountain Brook High (where he coached Trendon Watford) straight to Samford. If nothing else, he likes to play FAST.

Byington at Vandy is a miracle worker. What he's done with the 'Dores this year, after the wreakage of last year's 9-20, 4-14 disaster is the stuff that dreams are made of.

you whack jobs really overestimate the LSU Men's Basketball coaching job.

You whack it to pics of Matt McMahon

But do we need to poach another P5 coach? College basketball and the portal is really interesting in that it’s having almost an opposite effect to football. What I mean is when you look across these very successful SEC teams you’re seeing mostly mid major transfers instead of top 100 recruits so pulling a big name coach who racks up NBA type talent isn’t the winning model anymore. You can get a good basketball coach who can identify what he needs for his system and have a lot of success instead of accumulating top ranked talent and rushing to fit them into what you do before they leave. Guys like that are available and affordable if you have basketball people who can identify them.

He’s a perfect example of what we should be looking for
