Some pictures from this morning. A month and a half is a long way away. I was actually quite surprised that they were strutting with hens this time of year. In Holmes County, MS. 2 does also feeding with them.

I told me 9 year old the other day in the deer blind that we don't have much longer before he is required to be back in the woods with me.
I am God awful at calling and turkey hunting in general. Just started a few years back. But I am pumped to get out there and try again this year. My office is in a "downtown" area of a smaller city in the BR area. Someone in that area that has their personal residence recently started raising turkeys at the house as pets, and I walked outside week before last hearing a turkey gobble and the hair stood up on my neck.

I can’t wait to take my boy. He’s still got a couple of years but I’ve heard them gobble in the deer stand this year and it’s like my mind flips. Nothing better. Good luck to ya’ll this year

About an hour north of Jackson. That’s as close as you’re getting out of me.

Cool pictures.
Later in the deer season I was getting into a stand over a food plot, the plot had about 20 turkeys sitting in it when I got there. They left while I climbed in, but about 5 minutes after that one came back out and start strutting in the middle of the field.
Bastard

I have pics of strutting gobblers amongst feeding hens just last week. Central Alabama.
I also heard a gobble two weekends ago in the stand. At first I was like “nah”, but about 15 seconds later he fired off again. I’ve only heard them do that in Jan one other time, and that was around 2002-2003.
A buddy of mine sent me a video of a bird gobbling in late Dec this year. Also in Central Alabama. Weird times.

I've gotten pictures in both Madison and Yazoo counties, once the cold weather moved out. So close, yet so far

I have never been turkey or any kind of hunting in my life (very sad thing to say). However, I have always wanted to learn and go but never had the time or resources to go. Everything has finally lined up for me and I will go for the first time this spring. Any advice from the OB?

Beginning your hunting career on turkeys is a tall task.
Do you have land to hunt?

Yeah. My fiancé son in law has a place he is going to take me. He said it hasn’t been hunted in a couple years but it has some really good spots.
I’ve always heard starting off turkey hunting especially as a beginner is very difficult. Honestly, I plan to use this season as a learning experience. If I get an opportunity to shoot one that would be great but if I don’t, I wouldn’t be completely disappointed

It’s pretty common to hear them gobbling in January in our area. I prefer to think it just means you have enough turkeys to hear it.

We see turkeys on most deer hunts and its the same for me. We are going to hunt this weekend since it got extended, but my mind has flipped over to March 8 for youth turkey season in MS. This will be his second year trying to hunt them. Hopefully I can put him on one this year.

There are some guys out of Mississippi that do a podcast called Spring Legion. It's also a brand of sorts - they sell some camo, etc. I listen to that podcast leading up to the season. They have some episodes where they talk about something as basic as "what all do I put in my turkey vest?" Hunter, one of the guys, is also an author. He gets very romantic about turkey hunting in his writing - to the point I worry about the man's wellbeing in the offseason. But I understand turkey hunting does that to some people.
If you could find a buddy or two that knows what they are doing and bring them with you that is always the best way to learn. I started 4-5 years ago and I've got two buddies that are great at hunting turkeys.

The turkeys I had on my property seemed to have moved on. Haven’t seen in the last week or so.

Sure looking like some Yazoo Co woods to me.

Seen strutting in Monroe county Alabama already. Not uncommon in January in that area. On odd occasions you can hear a gobble but they really kick it up by the beginning of March. Really wish Alabama would revert to the March 15 opener for the southern part of the state. Cold mornings and open woods are, or were, my favorite time to hunker next to a tree.

Turkey seasons are being pushed back so that turkeys will have more breeding success.
