Why do people run in the middle of the road?

A question often pondered by the OT.

I run in a park, so when I see these threads I don't contribute much other than my usual diatribe.

However, I now have the answer.

I went for a run today and, since it's Saturday and I wasn't crunched for time, I drove into beautiful Alexandria, Louisiana for a run. Specifically, I ran in Charles Park.

I started on the sidewalk, but by the end of the run I was fully on the road. Between the uneven surfaces, the trash cans, the assholes parked on the sidewalk, and the flat out mysterious ending of sidewalks on to the road, I will never even attempt to use them again.

If you don't like people on your roads, you should fix the infrastructure that entices them to be on the sidewalk. I wanted to run on the sidewalk, but considering the frequency with which I was forced back on to the road, it was safer for me to be on the road the entire time rather than risking needing to transition to the road while a distracted driver previously saw me on the sidewalk.

Why is that my fault? You don't get to Create a safety hazard and break the law because the infrastructure is shite

Roads are flat and generally smoother to run, walk, and bike on.

It's not your fault. It's your burden. The burden is on you. I don't have a problem sharing the road with drivers. If you don't like runners on the road, you should do what you can to stop it. Getting close to them with your car doesn't work. We know you don't want to hit us just as much as we don't want to be hit.

Legality depends on locality, but I'm not going to get in trouble for running on the sidewalk when it's a hazard to do so. In fact, most codes state that if it's a hazard to run on the sidewalk, a pedestrian can use the road facing oncoming traffic.

If you run a significant amount of miles you typically can’t be contained in a park.

I try to map out my runs on roads with a significant size shoulder. Occasionally there’s a cut through or route that goes on roads not conducive with traffic. I typically run at 4:00am to avoid traffic.

Why?

Because I'm a White Man, Runyard?

ETA: everyone missed the Kipling joke I see.

Jeez, run the road if you want to but don't cry when you get hit

I do it because the road usually slopes. It's usually level in the middle. But i also pay attention and move toward the side when a car approaches.

Long distance running is one of the ways to accelerate aging.

You should run in the hood. Everyone walks in the streets there, vehicle coming be damned.

Because they are entitled assholes. That’s the reason.

ETA: running on the road =/= running in the middle of the road (which is what OP asked)

It's the same reason I take the full lane when riding my bike instead of riding on the shoulder or a bike lane

I was riding in a bike lane in the Florida Keys and a big piece of metal punctured and shredded my front tire 50 miles away from where I started the ride.

If the shoulder or bike lane is a debris trap filled with broken glass, gravel, and other materials that will cause me to crash or puncture my tire, I am just going to take the full lane. If you want me to use the bike lane, write your city councilman to keep the bike lane clean and maintained

I really meant no disrespect to you. I used to run long distance. I would run 5 miles every day but Sunday. I loved it. My body did not. I’m actually more healthy now then when I ran. I had 3 doctors tell me it ages you very quickly.

Also every long distance runner I have ever met looks 10-15 years older than they are.

Run on the grass and save your joints.

A lot of these driver's act tough but only when safely in their vehicle.

I suggest they read the laws so they know in many cases they must yield to pedestrians (32:193..) and cyclists (32:211..). Being upset that people more fit than you are using the road isn't the law.
