A group of my friends and I do the "go to a different baseball park" trip each year.

I'm looking at Detroit this year. Anyone been there and know if their downtown area is decent? Not looking for anything crazy but does it have a decent selection of bars and restaurants?

I’ve been to 24 of the current ballparks and really enjoyed Detroit. I think it is a nice ballpark. Since the ballpark, Ford Field, and Little Caesars Arena are right near each other, there are food and drink options nearby.

Comerica is a great stadium. Try to sit in the section with the wooden seats with a table between each seat. We haven’t seen anything like it at any park. We’ve been to about 20 parks now.

We stayed in the Novi area and would drive to the games, but downtown is nice with plenty of places to hang out.

We love old school Italian restaurants. Amore di Roma was great. It’s in the Eastern Market area. The Eastern Market was a fun place to walk around.

Henry Ford museum is a must see.

Detroit is awesome. Their downtown is really walkable. The baseball stadium is in an area with sports bars along with the football stadium and hockey arena. You have to check out the Henry Ford Museum.

I left Detroit about 6 years ago and it was early in a revitalization phase at the time, so lots has changed I suspect. At the time, Greektown was the hub for activity near the ballpark (casino, restaurants, etc).

2 of my good friends and I have been doing a “baseball trip” every summer for several years with our boys. Have been to 22 of the 30 parks, but haven’t made it to Detroit yet. Will be following this thread.

Hitting St Louis, Minnesota and opening weekend of the College World Series this year. Hoping the Tigers are there.

We did Pitt/Cleveland/Detroit years ago.... mixed in the NFL Hall Of Fame and Ann Arbor on that trip.

We used Detroit as an end point and didn't venture much other than some hockey bar and Comerica.

Canada is right across the river so I'd say you could easily venture there and they have Casinos out there.

Yes, like everyone else has said the area by the arenas is nice- don’t venture too much further out. I always stay at the MGM when I go: can walk to the stadiums, the downtown area, and the park where you can see Canada past the river. Henry ford museum and a trip to Windsor is great if you have time. I personally like Nikki’s for pizza when I’m there.

We’re doing Cubs, White Sox and Brewers this summer for our family trip. Will get us to 10 stadiums total. Any Chicago must dos would be appreciated. Spending a day in Milwaukee for the Brewers game.

Detroit, Cleveland, & Pittsburgh will all be done in one trip like someone else stated they did.

My son and I did these in a spur of the moment trip this past August. Sox the day we flew in, train to Milwaukee to catch the brewers the next day, and cubs the last day. We really enjoyed walking around the riverwalk area in Milwaukee. As far as Chicago goes there are a lot of threads here about it. We did very little research beforehand since it was a last minute trip, but we did the Willis tower, boat tour on the river, walked all over downtown, aquarium, navy pier, segway tour, etc…. The Segway tour we scheduled a few hours before and my son really enjoyed that. We’re talking about going back so that we can have more time to plan and really see the sites.

My wife and I like going new places so last spring we picked detroit of all places, one because it was intriguing and also because neither of us had been to michigan before.

I'll echo the above Detroit is great and very walkable downtown. As with pretty much any big major city, I'd be aware of where you are and what time it is but we never felt unsafe in any way at all jsut walking around doing normal stuff. All the big sports arenas are next to each other and walkable from downtown proper.

As for the Henry Ford museum you defnitley have to go. I'm not a car guy in any way at all so at first glance I couldn't have cared less but it's a lot more "miniature version of the Smithsonian" than it is "hey look at all these old Model-Ts". They have shite like the car JKF was shot in, the chair Lincoln was sitting in when he died, a piece of fabric from the Wright Brohters flight, etc. Cool stuff to see up close.
