Todd McShay recalls what drove Brian Kelly 'f****** crazy' from Jayden Daniels' early LSU

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - DECEMBER 03: Head coach Brian Kelly of the LSU Tigers talks with Jayden Daniels #5 prior to the SEC Championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 03, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Everyone is now well aware of how good Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is. The former LSU star has led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game as a rookie, following up an impressive regular season with even better performances in the playoffs.
But before Daniels was lighting up defenses in the NFL, he was struggling to gain confidence during his first season at LSU. NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay recently shared an interesting story of how Brian Kelly helped make Daniels a more confident player.
McShay joined Bill Simmons on his podcast recently to discuss Daniels and how he has blossomed into one of the brightest stars in the NFL.
“I remember being on the field with Brian Kelly before the Tennessee game (in 2022), and Tennessee came in, big favorites, and they wound up blowing out LSU in that game,” Todd McShay recalled. “And I remember being on the field with him and watching Jayden and having watched his tape and just saying like, ‘What do you see in practice that I’m not seeing? Because it looks like he can make all the throws but he just doesn’t seem to trust it. And the anticipation isn’t there’ and all that.
“And he said, ‘Watch the first play of this game. Just watch. Because we’re forcing him to make this throw. I’m not going to tell you where it’s going. But we’re forcing him to make this throw. Because we’re trying to prove to him that if you just trust your read and your eyes and you get the ball out on time, you’re special. You’re different than anything we’ve been around or seen.'"

Basically what most people saw all 2023 and how he was at ASU. Anyone with eyes could see he became a different guy in week 2/3 in his Heisman season.
He always flashed ability, you just hadn't seen it for 4 years as a starting QB.

As my dad used to say often, "Rome wasn't built in a day".

Thanks for sharing. Had not heard this before.
There are some on here that refuse to remember that JD was playing scared to throw a pick early on. It seems BK helped with this.
I have always felt like Jaden put in the work during the off-season using all the technology that LSU provided to gain confidence to know where he should go with the ball. It clicked and the game slowed down for him.

It was game 2 against Grambling. I know it was lowly Grambling and LSU was supposed to blow them out, but it clicked for JD in that game. He started throwing with slightly more anticipation which made a huge difference. Of course having Malik and Brian Thomas as your main targets made it a little easier.

It’s almost as if playing a game against a lesser opponent allows you to fine-tune some things before you face the meat of your schedule. Novel concept.
I have a great idea: Maybe LSU should try scheduling a team like Grambling in the first game? Just a thought.

Yeah, some people have awful memories. Kelly literally said he wanted JD to be more aggressive during the 2022 season in one of his press conferences before Tennessee.
quote:
"We haven't thrown any interceptions," Kelly said this week of Daniels. "That's not necessarily a bad thing in one respect."
"But if you are looking to be aggressive, you're going to throw an interception or two because somebody made a great play," Kelly explained. "Because you trust that you're going to throw it in there."
...
Kelly believes Daniels is not taking enough chances as a passer. He is not attempting to thread the needle enough by hitting a receiver between two defenders.
"We've got to get Jayden a little bit more on that edge," Kelly said. "Look, there's a difference between being on the edge aggressively and being reckless. We're way too conservative right now."

Hopefully Nuss is putting in the offseason work. If so, he'll be #3 to make a nice big beautiful jump in year 2 lol.

This!
I hope he can see the work ethic we had in both our recent Heisman guys. He has the arm. If he learns how to read the D they way those guys do, we could have our 3rd.

The light came on against Florida. Part of it was realizing that he had some studs at WR.

Teams dared JD to throw the deep ball. Once he trusted his arm and receivers, it was pick your poison.
As much as BK gets hated on, he develops his offensive players.

The biggest myth on this board is that Jayden had this crazy overnight 360 transformation. He was very incredibly disrespected in 2022 when after the bama win he actually gained some dark horse heisman buzz.
2023 the offense got much better around him and another year of continuity. Denbrock and BK took a back seat and let Jayden Daniels play free. Half our offensive production was Jayden scrambling for free yards. And when the defense started tightening on him he would throw deep balls to Nabers and BTJ.
Yes he gained confidence, yes he made quicker reads and decisions. But the Brian Kelly nuthuggers spinning it like one little off-season with the QB whisper turned him into this all world, heisman, ROTY, pro bowl player is fricking NUTS. The guy has ALWAYS been an elite talent.
It’s all the same idiots that were lobbying against him in 22’ and early 23’. “He can’t make reads”, “too small”, “he’s just a runner”

Who is gonna post that play that Kelly mentioned? I watched that game in an empty ballroom in Costa Rica and blocked most of it out.

Okay, I went and pulled up the replay. The first play in that game was like an 8 yard hitch route to the split end. I was expecting an aggressive throw.

He won the starting gig at LSU be being the anti-Nuss, a mobile QB who made the quick, easy throws. He became a Heisman winner when somebody taught him to say, “chuck it. Nabers and BJT are down there somewhere.”

It was a 5 yard pass to Mason.
