Tried to watch The Thicket last night. I couldn’t. My favorite genre is so often butchered till I no longer get excited when I see a new trailer.

Is that the one about the trans cowboy villain that kidnaps the little girl? Could tell from short mans acting in the trailer and reading the description it would be hot garbage

I read the book last year. It was pretty good. I saw the trailer and said that is too far from the book. Don't think I'll watch it

If anyone wants an example of a bad 'old' b-western, take a look at "The Border Menace" (1934), starring Bill Cody. It's a laughable bit of super-low budget schlock. Fly-by-night, independent producers from back then could make some real cheesy stuff, yet I still find a certain insane charm in them. But when modern westerns are bad, they can be unwatchable horrors.

Yea. The bad guy " cutthroat bill" is a woman. They kill the main characters grandpa, kidnap his sister, and then bounty hunter peter dinklage helps hunt they/them down.

I mean, why bother adapting a book when you can slap the name of the book onto your own shite story ?

You can say that for almost any of the entertainment industries. It’s all watered down regurgitated crap. The Music industry now. Heck Super Hero Movies are becoming the Spaghetti Westerns of today. That’s just for starters.

My theory is that westerns in particular have a disadvantage. There have been probably thousands of western movies made in the past century plus tv shows. And any western is limited to a specific setting, specific atmosphere, set level of technology. So it must be tough to come up with fresh creative stories.

Big fan of westerns here and I think the biggest issue is that no just anyone will be good in a western. I think the casting is the biggest issue.

Because the great Unforgiven happened and ended Westerns.

They had to come up with newfangled stupid Westerns that had no black and white hat...and that's really the genre.

3:10 to Yuma does a great job with suspense and character development. Producers and directors can learn from that.

Westerns were basically morality plays and well Hollywood just doesn't do that anymore.

Westerns have been “bad” since The Great Train Robbery in 1903 (basically the first western). And I say that as someone that likes Westerns.

It’s all part of the genre.

What you want is a drama in a western setting which isn’t a western.
