Tom Landry's Tenure as the First HC of the Dallas Cowboys

For some reason I was looking at the career of Steve Bartkowski, saw where in his best season he lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs, and it dawned on me how dominant the Cowboys were amongst their NFL/NFC peers during a long stretch, always making the playoffs. So I want back to the beginning, and something I didn't realize, Tom Landry was the franchise's first head coach, and lasted from 1960-1988.
60: 0-11-1
61: 4-9-1
62: 5-8-1
63: 4-10
64: 5-8-1
65: 7-7
66: 10-3-1 Lost NFL Champ Game to SB I winner Packers
67: 9-5 Lost NFL Champ Game to SB II winner Packers
68: 12-2 Lost Div round to Browns
69: 11-2-1 Lost Div round to Browns
70: 10-4 Lost SB V to Colts
71: 11-3 Won SB VI
72: 10-4 Lost NFC Champ Game to Redskins
73: 10-4 Lost NFL Champ Game to Vikings
74: 8-8
75: 10-4 Lost SB X to Steelers
76: 11-3 Lost Div Round to Rams
77: 12-2 Won SB XII
78: 12-4 Lost SB XIII to Steelers
79: 11-5 Lost Div round to Rams (who made the SB)
80: 12-4 Lost NFC Champ Game to Eagles
81: 12-4 Lost NFL Champ Game to 49ers
82: 6-3 Lost NFC Champ Game to Redskins
83: 12-4 Lost Wild Card to Rams
84: 9-7
85: 10-6 Lost Div Round to Rams
86: 7-9
87: 7-8
88: 3-13
Now...when the wheels fell off at the end, they really fell off. Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 in 1989. But that stretch after the first six years of Landry building the franchise was one hell of a run. Dude has to be one of the GOATs, despite having a losing SB record (2-3). And I say that as someone who has always disliked the Cowboys.

I think he’s widely considered one of the goats.

I was a Redskins fan, but I admire what Landry did. He had a run of good/great QBs with outstanding pieces around them. Unfortunately, those QBs didn't last as long as he did.

I think of Staubauch as definitely great, probably doesn't get enough credit when people think of the greatest QBs of all time. Danny White was good. Craig Morton was...serviceable, in my unprofessional opinion.
Absolutely drafted and developed players well, on both sides of the ball. And then you look at how often NFL, and especially college, QBs are in the shotgun these days.
Though watching the old games and highlights, it seems Staubauch is further back in the shotgun than what we see today.

I think he is still, and definitely was a couple decades ago. But I feel like that stretch from 66-83 at times isn't fully realized. That's incredible.

Landry invented the flex defense.

Don't forget Don Meredith on those first four playoff teams.
Craig Morton went to a Super Bowl with Denver .

Jerrah would have fired him in the 63 season

In 1975 they were rebuilding and went to the Super Bowl.
Landry brought back the shotgun offense.
He was calling the offensive plays while most teams QBs were still doing it.
Was a class guy and great head coach

If Jackie Smith could only catch he'd have another SB

Interestingly enough, he was good enough at catching that he’s in the Hall of Fame.

You all need to read North Dallas Forty and God's Coach. He was a man of contradictions. Hard to believe that someone who loved Jesus so much was so hard and cruel to his players. You can't serve two masters.

He invented the 4-3 defense of which the flex was and he also invented the shotgun pass.

He was the rare guy who could coach both sides of the ball: the Flex 4-3, and the multiple sets and shotgun.

The Landry Shift was a thing of beauty

He was certainly one of, if not THE classiest HC in history. Always dapper and reserved.
