I predict many leaking roofs as this snow turns to ice tonight

Louisiana roofs usually only use ice and water shield in valleys. Not the whole roof like up north. Once the top melts because heat rises, and that's also the part that gets the most sun, the bottom will still be ice forming a dam. The water gets trapped and backs up like a reservoir and works its way under shingles where the only thing stopping it is roof felt. Felt is waterproof but the seams arent
There were many new roofs in SWLA after the hurricanes that leaked during the 2021 freeze because of ice dams
I just used a long paint handle extended out to about 12' feet I had to knock at least the edges down to help it melt faster and not cause a dam. If you can, I would suggest doing the same.
It might be for nothing but better safe than sorry.

You mean when it starts to melt tomorrow or Thursday?

It was already melting here and will drop to 19 tonight. It will be ice in the morning. The melt is what causes the ice dam.
As I said, better safe than sorry.

They shouldn't be. The roof will be fine after it thaws.
Flooring and drywall guys might need to get ready, though.

OP is correct. At a minimum pull the snow off your eaves.

Thanks I’ll be on the lookout to break the dams if I see them on my roof

You dont have to do it. You might like the new indoors water feature if it happens.

Planning to play with the snow on the roof in the morning. Don’t feel like dealing with it tonight, so 8am it is.

Toms of people here in cenla got new roofs as a result of the 21 ice storm. They should all have had ice shields installed along the eaves as a result

Maybe. Some roofers will but a lot only do the valleys

Same. Funny my new roof was going on next week

Kids are all bundled up at the fireplace watching some crappy descendants movie while I’m working on my bourbon and surfing through TD. The roof can wait

If I have ridge vents and soffit vents, should I be concerned?

There’s one guy here locally that also does work up in Iowa so he makes ice shields standard on the ones he does down here. You probably have heard of his company did a bunch down in LC after the storms. Hahn’s roofing

Yes. It can still ice up and cause a dam.
My eaves had like 2' of snow in some areas. That is going to melt a lot slower than the higher spots and more likely to turn to ice.
