Toyota Sienna Hybrid, Pro/Cons?
Posted on 1/18/25 at 9:15 pm

We're looking at upgrading to a minivan or a 3rd row vehicle once our son is born, with the Toyota Sienna as our leading option right now.
What are the boards thoughts on the Sienna or hybrids in general? I'm pretty ignorant when it's comes to hybrids and their reliability. Toyota offers a 10 year/150k mile warranty on the battery.
If not the Sienna, any other suggestions on 3rd row vehicles?

Minivan only?
Honda Odyssey hybrid.

I wanted an AWD hybrid, but the ones I was seeing were absurdly expensive (over $60k but looks like there are some cheaper ones now) for a minivan. Not crazy about the ground clearance but it’s almost 7 inches so not terrible that’s what she said. (Woodland Edition.)
You’ve inspired me to check them out again.

My wife’s Sienna kicks arse. I love road trips in that thing or any trip that I can drive it. So much room. No cons. Your wife will have a phd in carpool

The base model is the only one with spare tire.
Hybrids are light years better than all electric.
36mpg advertised.
On road trips I get 37 or up.
In town I’m at 35.9
Taken it in snow up to hood and bachelor no problem with proper tires.
piled 6 adults no problem. With boards on roof.
Luged 7 teenagers to many away rugby matches over an hour.
Although I would not one to sit in middle of middle row.
Side seats in middle row recline way back. My kids usually sleep on longer car rides.
Back row reclines. But not as much as middle.

We went with the Odyssey Elite over the Sienna. Elite is the top package and we paid $48,000.
Comparable Sienna was about $12K more.
The 13-15 mpg difference would like have taken 25 years to break even on cost at the rate she drives.
We'd spend about $524 more a year in gas for the Odyssey.
It was a straight numbers game for us.

Rented one in L.A. earlier this week. Drove around town and then over to Las Vegas today. EV mode works in the city. Gas on the highway. 30+ mpg. Lots of room. Quiet and smooth ride. Ran it at 95-100 through the desert without issue. But it’s a minivan. If you can get over that, not a bad ride.
Will return home to my Tahoe and my manhood next week.

Test drove a Sienna and odyssey and just liked the drive and feel of the odyssey much better.
Honestly though the stripped down dodge voyager is the best minivan. Damn shame that car got killed only to be reborn with more stupid features that break.

Easy on gas. Comfortable. Just traded one in for an Odyssey.
Automatic translating doors. Why would you ever play car seat games without these?

Minivan is the right choice. Small SUVs are stupid.

The Highlander might be the most boring vehicle on the road. A Siena is superior.

I don't like that the middle row of seats are not intended to be removable in the Sienna. It is possible to remove them, but it involves tools and disconnecting the airbags. We had a Grand Caravan growing up and I remember how tremendously useful it was to be able to remove all of the seats and have a large cargo space. While none of the rear seats folded into the floor, removing them wasn't a huge hassle.
I think the Odyssey is overdue for an update to so it matches the rest of Honda's lineup (most have been updated since 2022 except for the Ridgeline and Odyssey), but that would be my pick over the Sienna. I also like Honda's 3.5 V6. My mother has a 2017 Ridgeline and it drives quite well.

Minivans decimate SUV’s with kids under 14 in regards to accessibility and comfort ability. There’s just no comparison. Getting in and out of a parking lot with 2+ kids out of a minivan is a cake walk compared to SUV’s. Road trips are much better.
Sienna is a great vehicle but the odyssey blows it away on price right now. I guess because the sienna is only a hybrid? As said already, it’s $10k or so more on average for the same features. The math just doesn’t math.

Don’t listen to the low T guys that can only say… but it’s a minivan. Their balls aren’t big enough to handle it

Odyssey not having AWD is a head scratcher.
For the folks that pull out into traffic with 2 wd in rain, it only seems like a no brainer.

I have had my Sienna for 4 years and it’s been a great vehicle. I didn’t want a mini van but you can’t beat the price and the space. I looked at the Honda but we didn’t like the look of it compared to the Sienna and we really liked the hybrid. Our biggest selling feature on the Sienna is that the second row seats slide all the way back to the 3rd row. This gives so much leg room for the second row. Our teenage daughter is really tall so it makes it nice especially on road trips that she’s not cramped. There is actually so much space that we put an ottoman in front of the second row so she can prop her feet up while we are taking our long trips.
