So do dealerships just expect you to pay the sticker price these days on used vehicles?

Went to two to look today, didnt tell them how much I was looking to spend or anything about financing or down payments.

One wanted sticker price plus 1000 in doc fees and prep fees and would only come off 400.

The other wanted 3000 in doc fees and prep fees and would only drop those off.

I walked out on both.

Been a while since I went through a dealership, but seemed to be the sticker price wasnt really negotiable, just their add on fees.

I hate car shopping and admit I'm not well versed. But trying to learn.

Find a private seller. Dealerships suck.

Depends on the dealership and the vehicle.

The used market has been a shitshow for a long time, especially for trucks.

Thats what I did with my last two and why I havent gotten one from a dealership lately. Probably will be waiting longer and trying to do it again.

The internet makes it to where most dealerships have to have a more competitive listing price off the bat. It’s not really like back in the day where they listed their vehicles $10k over and you negotiate them down $5k and everyone walks away winners.

About to run into this with my 16 yr old son. He wants a used truck and it’s just ridiculous out there now unless we want a money pit that will constantly need work. I have no idea what to do

Cash for clunkers really fricked the used market up.

My daughter act wants a small truck for her first vehicle k knowing it'll be passed to her brother's. She's very practical....

She's also not getting a small truck. They are stupid expensive.

(Edited to say they are stupid expensive price wise now)

Negotiate via email before ever stepping foot on the lot. It can all be landed before you get in.

The used market has been consolidated somewhat by Carmax type companies.

At auctions, they buy all the decent inventory at a price that does not leave room for the smaller independent dealers to flip a car and make some money.

The big consolidators make the money on car loans. Especially high interest loans.

This is what my friend who is a small independent used car man told me recently. He said it has gotten tough to get good inventory at a price where he can make a decent profit.

I’d love some recommendations on how to handle in the modern era, so much of what I find seems sketchy and even scams.

I haven’t bought private party since pre 2010, and the landscape is sorta daunting

Louisiana needs to get its shot together and allow Tesla to sell directly. Once you go through the Tesla process you’ll never buy another car at the auto dealerships again.

private sellers these days are out of touch with the market for the most part. They are wanting more than dealers. We see it all the time.

I was looking at used 3/4 ton trucks and the dealers act like they can’t keep them on the lot. Meanwhile, the new ones have $15,000 rebates. Felt the same. I mention and they just shrugged their shoulders.

Walked out as well. It’s a matter of time before all prices come down. Best of luck to you.
