I'm surprised people were naive enough to believe it - especially considering the source. The master of creating clicks in the media someone like Matt intends to do. It should've been common sense immediately he was lying by the way he worded it.
Considering Matt has no problem leaking and stealing the thunder away from when someone he knows commits the fact he cryptically and ambiguously words it as "a safety on a playoff team" should've immediately been a red flag to anyone.

Yeah, I never put much stock into the rumor of a starting safety from a playoff team. If the Tigers get one, that's great, but it always seemed like a typical internet farce. I wasn't aware that people took it seriously.

I in no way disagree with anything in your post but it's just as easily plausible there was a guy that just got bought back. That's the state of things now.
To add more plausibility, and deniability, let's remember last portal cycle with the mysterious DT, everyone assumed was Pat Jenkins, that was a lock. Winter portal passed, additional players added, no mystery DT. Then the story was we were up against numbers and and their eye was on him for the spring portal. Still being expected on the roster. Portal passes with every day, questions abound, answers less so, portal ends, no mystery DT. In fact we never landed a DT, famously striking out on multiple fronts. Still no accountability from the insiders. Those insiders were from ON3, everyone's favorite.
All that to say, I don't for a second believe Shea and co. purposely mislead but it's just as plausible they were as fraudulent as Moscono with equivalent deniability and accountability. Just as likely the situations are similar than to the contrary.
