Thank you all 30% eligible voting buffoons for allowing this douche canoe into office. But hey, muh state deductions.

Louisiana streaming service subscribers will now pay sales tax on subscriptions

quote:

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana residents who subscribe to streaming services and television providers will now pay a 10% sales tax on the services.

The new tax, which went into effect on Jan. 1, was passed as a part of Gov. Jeff Landry's widespread tax plan legislators voted on in a special session in November.

According to an email sent to Cox subscribers, the tax will appear under the "Taxes, Fees and Surcharges" section of future bills.

Previously, streaming services were not subject to state sales tax. The law's language says the new tax is one of multiple laws designed to modernize the state's tax code.

This article says that the tax will be applied to your local ISP bill

How can this be if you are logging in under another person's subscription? Is that legal ?

Fun fact, you were paying a similar tax when you had cable. So paying it for digital TV services or streaming media will be no different than cable. You were actually going around the tax by buying these services online. I would assume YouTubeTV will have the same jump on taxes. Heck they should even level the paying field with YT TV and add franchise fees and other local taxes to throw the local governments a bone.

Now when you start taxing onlyFans services, then you may have some on this board more outraged.

Maybe they’ll use the new tax revenue to build new infrastructure!

Something tells me ISPs are gonna pass this on to everyone who uses the internet regardless of their streaming habits

Surely they’ve mixed this up. Maybe they mean streaming services bundled through Cox. Pretty sure Netflix and such were already charging tax.

I think the majority of this board would prefer consumption taxes to state income tax. Not sure you’re going to get a bunch of Landry hate that you’re hoping for.

If this applies to YouTube TV as well, it'll probably be $20 a month in taxes for me. YT TV, Netflix, Max, Apple+, Paramount, Hulu/ESPN, BritBox, Amazon Prime. Starts to add up.

It is not the ISP. You probably are already paying some taxes on your internet services.

It is the video or streaming service that you pay for that is now collecting the tax, like Hulu, YouTube, Fubo, Netflix, etc.

Before it wasn’t taxed as it was in a grey area where it wasn’t taxed or some were collecting and others weren’t.
