Like clockwork, I had two hens land on my boxes this morning. Time to clean out and refill with shavings. I have to move two off of trees as I can't keep critters out of them.

I have the materials to build a couple and need to do that soon. Would like to have some using the lake at my farm.

We put two new ones out by our pond last weekend. Hoping to get some action now that we have rebuilt our pond from the dam breach last spring. We put one back in the woods on the creek and the other in the corner of the pond.

Is it a necessity to add shavings to the box or will the wood ducks gather their own nesting material?

You have to add shavings. It mimics the shavings leftover from woodpeckers chipping their way into a tree.

The easiest is to get cedar chips from just about any pet section of Walmart and it’ll work fine. Dump and replace each year, as old sites will have old egg shell and crap in there.

Best way to check the boxes is to put an iPhone on “video” in landscape mode, then hit the arrow and put flash to “on”. You’ll then have a way to inspect the box without opening it up. Saves a bunch of time and potential run-ins with snakes, wasps, squirrels, and hen wood ducks.

Will Mexican Whistlers use duck boxes? We have several around the south end of Indian Creek but they seem to like nesting on the ground.

They will, but they generally best a good bit later than woodies.

Yes, I get shaved cedar at Tractor supply. Put two boxes out yesterday and have one more todo. Ducks are looking now. You can use cypress leaves in a pinch.

It's been an absolute surge in the last few days. Really wish I had more than 4 boxes.

What type of wood are you guys using? Plans call for 1x10 cedar, not seeing that size around my location.

Yep, my Uncle has a few boxes, they live an 1/4 mile from the Mississippi River. The littles get kicked out the box. Walk over the levee, start swimming in a borrow/bar pit.

One of my boxes had a full blown cat squirrel nest in it complete with the squirrel. I scared the crap out of her and trimmed as much of the surrounding limbs as I could. My sig sauer air rifle will be on the ready.

I had a family of flying squirrels in one of mine one year. I get a little owl every year in one box.

First duckling just jumped. Kinda worried about the rest. Hope it's not a flaw in my box.
