Dang mexican tree ducks showed up yesterday. We have had boxes up on the property for well over fifty years and this year we have the smallest amount of woodducks I have ever seen. I sure hope these invaders are not out competing the natives.

I end up with both, but the black bellies have never pushed out my woodies, and they tend to nest after the first woody broods anyway.

That's awesome. Our Pond Mallards hatched out 13 fuzz balls a week ago. We made them the Hen Houses like Delta make for the prairie.

Have 11 more in our flight pen that are laying like crazy. Have 48 eggs in incubator and another 30 going in tonight. Then going to let the hens raise their own.

Since the mallard hatched hers out of the Hen House the Squealers have already moved in and are laying.

A guy that owed me a favor built ones from leftover western cedar he had at his house. Smells like an old barn

We now have three different broods following hens up and down the bayou. The duck/squirrel competition was real this morning.

Well, the aluminum flashing has proven to be at least somewhat ineffective. I will be getting full guards for next laying season.

I know he's just doing snake things a snake does but a .22 would fix him up.

I put up a wood duck box in my pond in early march but no takers yet.
I guess it takes time for them to find and use it.

Wood duck box

There are some trees left of the box but out of view
A whistler hangs around on the pond bank but haven't seen it on the box.

A biologist told me that a pond is tough on wood ducks because they will use it but the ducklings won’t stand a chance without some hiding spots. Essentially wasting a brood.

Just fyi, don’t know if entirely accurate

Even with all the willow, button wood and cypress on our bayou, we watch the broods diminish over time. Cooper's hawks for sure. Guessing snapping turtles get some.
