Honda and Nissan have formally agreed to hold talks over the next six months on a possible merger, a deal that would create the world’s third-largest automaker and give them more resources to compete with a growing threat from Chinese carmakers.

quote:

But with the cost and challenges of the industry’s efforts to shift from gasoline-powered cars and trucks to electric vehicles and with rising competition from Chinese automakers, which have moved past most Western automakers in those efforts, Honda and Nissan needed to combine resources in order to remain competitive.

“Today marks a pivotal moment,” Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said in a statement announcing the negotiations. “Together, we can create a unique way for (customers) to enjoy cars that neither company could achieve alone.”

Nissan has struggled since the collapse of its alliance with Renault, facing severe financial problems that put it in desperate need of a larger merger partner.

Profits in six months ending in September plunged 94% compared with the same period in 2023, as the company lost money on auto operations and reported only a narrow profit due to its financing business. In response, Nissan announced it would cut its manufacturing output by 20%, laying off 9,000 workers as a result. It also slashed its forecast for full-year operating profit by 70%.

If Krogers can't merge with Albertsons due to antitrust, how can these two link up?

Very different with these two being international companies. Is there an international governing body for M&A?

found this... sounds complicated and would take a long time:

For international companies, mergers and acquisitions are primarily regulated by the competition authorities in each individual jurisdiction where the companies operate, with key examples including the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States, and the European Commission in the European Union; essentially, the relevant antitrust agencies in each country involved in the deal will review and potentially approve or block the merger based on their own competition laws

Honda and Nissan together would only be about 13% of the US car market. That would be less than both GM and Toyota, and about equal with Ford.

The kroger/Albeertsons deal, while only being about 17% of the total US market, was bad for certain regions of the country where those two made up much more than that 17%. Honda and Nissan are spread fairly equal across the country.

Honda bout to take on serious baggage.

And what is the deal with trying to compete on EVs? They know we don't have the money, material, or desire to build out the electric infrastructure it would take to make EVs viable in the long term.

Exactly.

Why would they even want to mess with a turd like Nissan?

That would be a huge win for Nissan, not so much for Honda.

First, it’s Kroger. You old timers need to stop putting an S on the end of everything.

Second, what does Honda and Nissan have to do with American laws?

I agree. I think the world is moving back to ICE/Hybrid focus. China is moving forward with EV. They are pushing hard around the world with it. They've attacked MX with hoping to to be ready to bounce on our market with them.

Only thing I can think of that is keeping EVs viable is the autonomous movement. Idk, maybe others can confirm, is autonomous vehicles way more possible with EVs over an ICE/Hybrid?

If so, China will be prime to fill out streets with their vehicles sending data back to them, if autonomous Uber gets going.

Not sure about Mazda, but I believe that Mitsubishi - at least the automotive division - is going to be in the combined company.

From WSJ this morning:
quote:

The companies said they intended to create an automaker that, combined with Nissan partner Mitsubishi Motors, would be the third-largest carmaker in the world, after Toyota and Volkswagen, with more than eight million vehicles sold annually.
