And what time of year are bass flies most productive on ponds and golf course lagoons.
Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated by me being a total novice from NOLA and only knowledgeable of salt water fishing for speckled trout.

Big poppers will get you bass, what size weight is your rod?

There are two young men at the BR Orvis store who can hook you up when it comes to flies. Matt, the fishing mgr, or the young man from Birmingham who just graduated from LSU. Great guy I’m ashamed I can’t recall his name. They both happily FaceTime my fly fishing son in Little Rock and help him pick out seasonal bass, panfish, and trout flies.

My go-to for southern fishing is a bead Head wooly worm…looks like a caterpillar, it has enough weight so it will sink. I haven’t found a fish yet that wouldn’t eat it!

A black sneaky Pete when the sun is out. Springtime is best. Good luck!

I purchased A 8 rod to increase my casting distance which brings up another question : should I put on a lighter line like a 6 ?

No use an 8wt line. Weight forward.

Like Sas said, an 8 wt will not do well going lower in line weight. You can go up a line weight (9 wt) and be fine and be a little more forgiving but going down to a 7 or 6 makes the rod harder to cast well.
As to flies, I'm a huge fan of wooly worms like another poster said for bream and bass. I tie most all my own flies and do the normal olive and black, but a lot of times I will tie them with really bright colors, chartreuse, pink, etc.
Deer hair bass flies are so much fun to use. There are poppers and I also like using a Dahlberg diver some.

This would be my response. Go to BR Orvis store and ask them.

I have a 5 weight TFO rod and a reel that most don't know because it's so old but it's a classic.
It took almost an hour for my son to get his first with a fly a few months ago but it was awesome

Thanking all the bass fishermen for their favorite lures in and around BR ponds and lagoons.
And a Merry Christmas to all.
