SxS Recommendation/Opinion

I’m in the market for a lightly used side by side. Usage would mainly be hunting, working around property, and the occasional recreational trip with the family. I’d like to have a minimum of 4 seats (2 will be for children) and bed space to haul feed, decoys, tools, etc.
I’ve looked at the Honda Pioneer, Yamaha Viking, Polaris Ranger, Cam-Am Defender and CF Moto. Are there any makes/models I’m missing that I should look at?
I’d like to hear opinions on reliability and quality on the brands that you have experience with.
I’m currently leaning towards the Honda Pioneer 700-4. The price point for a lightly used is reasonable, provides enough seating with the flip up seats and ability for full bed space.
Is there another brand that offers the dump-bed with flip up seats?

I got a 2020 Polaris Ranger XP 1000 for $14,000 280 hours back in September. I didn’t want to drop $24,000 on a brand new machine. I did have to replace a couple of CV axles and put a small lift on it to put bigger tires when I take it to Arkansas. Good machine a lot of power so far. We bought my mother a Kawasaki Mule Pro FXT 3 years ago. Several of my friends have those and they beat tf out of them and they’ve held up

The Mule 6 seater turns into a 2 seater with a bigger bed if you fold the rear seats up.

I’ve had awesome service out of my Kubota RTV. It’s not fast but it’s been great for the 15 years that I’ve owned it.

I hear great things about Kawasaki.

Very nice. Would be my pick.
Can get them for about 16k in great shape.
Small lift just a spacer and cheap add on. Makes a huge difference.
Bed is giant when in two seater configuration.
Bed is large e ough you can slip in a basket in the hitch underneath and not kick it when you move around for extra storage. Especially to put a deer on and not have to lift into the bed.

We have 2 Mules.
One is about 5 years old, with weekend around the farm use and deer hunting, very little duck hunting.
Liked it enough that when my wife inherited one with like 20 hours on it, we kept it instead of trying to upgrade to high end Ranger, Can Am, etc.
They’re not the most glamorous looking things, not as sporty looking, just plain old bench seats, limited top end speed, but I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them on the reliability and maintenance aspect.
They’re just good solid, reliable machines for practical use.

I do not have one but I have 2 buddies that do. One thing I have noticed is that I will not get one that has the fold down seats the the bed. A buddy has a 700 pioneer with out the fold down seats in the bed and he doesn’t have poles for the roof in the bed. Another buddy has one that has the fold down seats in the bed and a pole for roof support is in the bed and limits what you can haul in the bed.

700-4 has no power and rides like a bull dozer.
Went with the 1000-5 and very pleased with it.

We have a Polaris Ranger 1000 crew (not XP) and my brother has the 1000 3 seater and couldn’t be happier. The non-XPs use the same engine block but are built to run smoother at lower speed, but still have plenty of get up and go if you stomp on the gas. The XPs charge you a lot for nicer graphics, sewn seats, and a top end speed you’ll probably never get anywhere near. Have driven several Hondas and there’s a long list of reasons I’ll never own one. Used is a gamble I’m not willing to take and most want about what they paid for it, keep the trim levels down and you can get a new machine with a warranty for about what you’ll get a bogged out higher trim.

You really need to check out Kawasaki. I’ve had a Teryx 750 NRA since 2008, and other than annual oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, and a set if tires, hasn’t needed much else repair or maintenance. The vinyl on the seats finally decided to start cracking within the last couple years, tho…

FIL has a pioneer 700 base and it’s a dog. Sounds like it’s gonna blow up at 30+ mph and no power steering. I used his friend’s pioneer 1000 eps and the power difference and ease of driving was unbelievable.

Ditto, and I’m very pleased. Some of the ones with longer beds won’t wrap around trees where we hunt, this was a good compromise and it will carry 500-600# of corn, yet also haul 5-6 people on the beach in Grand Isle during the summer.

Had a 2016 Honda 1000-5 Pioneer. Gremlins got in it and I sold it once I was tired of fixing it. Bought a CanAm Defender HD10 and really like it so far. Way more power than the Pioneer, especially at low speed. Only thing I’m unsure of is I got the XMR model because that’s what my wife picked out.
Don’t know if you can really go wrong with any of the name brands. They all seem to be pretty solid so I based my decision on who I thought was the best dealer.

That thing is a dog. Slow as hell. And you can’t have 4 seats and a bed at the same time.
If you’re going to get a Honda, and haul at least 4 people and a bunch of hunting gear, you’d want the new longer Pioneer 1000-6 that is as long as the other brands’ crew cab models.
I have Honda atvs and when I went to get a crew cab sxs I got the Ranger 1000XP and tuned it and put a clutch kit in it. It’s been great. It’s fast and has plenty of power to pull a 20ft trailer loaded with a couple thousand pounds.
Go test drive them all and pick the one you like.

I have the Pioneer 1000-5 (2020), the heat in the cab is a killer, also the back seats are only good for the smallest of kids. Mechanically it is strong, top speed is 65.
Whatever you get, make sure it has decent speed if you ever want to go on a trail ride. Unless they have recently changed, Mules are slow.
I'd look closely at the canned ham if I was in the market again.

Any of the Kawasaki Mule Pro's get my vote

This won’t be a popular opinion but…..I have a pioneer 1000 and a kubota sidekick 850. The pioneer is about 7k more for 10 mph. For the price the kubota is a better machine.
