Military or some sort of public service should be mandated for at least a year to be eligible for any public benefits.

Men only or men and women? We have so many people and such a big area of the country it would be expensive. Plus all of our “battles” are geographically far away. If we’re short on people a lottery for reserves would make more sense.
It makes sense why Israel does it the way they do, but they fund it all.
Their soliders can go for service/go fight and be home on nights and/or weekends.
They also fund a year after service time to go travel the world and find yourself/have fun/relax before heading to University.

It might be a little difficult when 20% of the population don't have the IQ to meet the entrance requirements, and then you have the physical requirements. I'd expect at least 50% of current 18 year old men would be excluded on those two things alone.

I do think we should do what Israel does and require service to your country for two years. You can wait until after college to do it, but it should be required (barring brain deficiencies or severe mental illness). Would really get our country into shape and make our citizens more patriotic.
