PSA - Regions Bank

I was recently the victim of bank fraud. $30k was withdrawn out of my bank account back in August. When it took place, it was on a Saturday late afternoon. A notice was sent to my phone asking if a $500 purchase was legit. I informed them that it was not. They cancelled my Debit card, took my account off line from online banking, and asked me to come in on Monday.
I showed up on Monday, expecting to get my money refunded to my account. Didn't happen. They just took down the blow by blow and told me that they would submit a ticket to the home office Fraud Dept and would let me know. I stayed on top of them 3 times a week, until I was informed a month later that my claim was DENIED!! I wore out the branch manager over this. I told her that I wanted her to file an appeal and I wanted to speak with the manager of the Fraud Dept. They don't allow anyone to speak with the Fraud Dept including the branch managers at their locations. It is all done by the ticket system. I wrote up the appeal that she filed giving every minute detail of what took place. She filed my appeal and told me that it could take a while. I contacted them 3 times a week for another month until I was informed that I was DENIED AGAIN!!!
At that point I filed a police report and contacted an attorney to get the best advice I could with how to proceed forward. Police did not give me very encouraging information regarding bank fraud refunds. The Detective did tell me that of the 16 fraud cases that he was working on, 12 of them coincidentally were from Regions accounts. Unbelievable.
So fast forward to this past Thursday and I get another text message from Regions saying I had a $30k deposit to my account. I showed up Friday morning to speak with the branch manager and she had no idea what I was talking about. I leave pissed and confused. 2 hours later she calls and tells me that she located the $30k deposit in my account. I asked her what the catalyst was that turned the tide on my case. She had zero answers. No idea why or how.
The next day I went by the bank, picked up a cashiers check and closed all my accounts with Regions. These people were clueless the entire time. No help whatsoever. No communication with the home office to tell my story or for them to ask me questions about the voracity of the claim. Nothing. No apology. I would reconsider banking with Regions.

They've sucked since the days they bought out AmSouth.
Use a credit union folks.

That's scary. No info on where the $30k went? What kind of scam?

You had 30K in an account with a debit card attached to it?

I have 30k brag.
Glad it got resolved for you

Would you prefer I lie about the amount to make you feel better about yourself?
The purpose of the post was to inform people to think twice about banking with an incompetent bank, run by idiots with shitty systems in place.
I went through hell getting my money back over the past 4 months. I would not wish this type situation on my worst enemy.

OP is lucky to have recovered the money. The law does not require the bank to do that for debit accounts.

Perfect. This is what I was hoping to eventually read after first couple of paragraphs.
Also, for the kids out there… Don’t ever use debit cards. Unless at your bank’s ATM machine.

I had a fradulent transaction with Regions and they refunded it the same day. Granted it was $300, not 30k. The assholes had managed to get my routing and account number so I had to close out a checking account I've had since 1998.
My only issue was the local branch told me they didn't have the staffing in place that day to open my new account. I told them to get me a cashier's check and I'd find a bank that had time for me. Amazingly the branch manager decided they could open that account for me.
Otherwise my experience with Regions has not been bad.

Actually, the law does, but for an infinitesimal number of exceptions, require it. Look up 12 cfr 1005, formerly known as Reg E. They absolutely had to give provision credit within 10 at least days. Possibly only 5 depending on the card brand. Only exception would be if they asked for him to submit the notice of error in writing and he refused.
That tells me there is much more to the story or it’s all bullshite. If not, he absolutely has grounds to sue the shite out of them.
For everyone else, you should assume that your card digits have been compromised. At this point, no matter how careful you think you’ve been, they probably have. You should also not expect your rt and acct # to be a secret. Images of your checks are likely all over the place so consider that as well. Under no circumstances should you keep an amount of money that you can’t afford to lose in an account tied to either one of those. Transfer it in and out as needed, but don’t leave it sitting there. Use credit cards wherever possible. If fraud happens on a credit card it only potentially affects your available balance. If it happens on your debit card could afrect your actual balance until it’s figured out. Just pay the credit card off each month. Keep your funds in a separate account from your “transaction” account and just transfer when needed. IE, when it is time for your monthly credit card payment, transfer the funds from your “savings” account to your “transaction” account.
As stated previously, if you have a choice, choose your local community bank or credit union.

Been with Regions since it was Union Planters. Never had a problem with them.
Feels like something is being left out of this story, but congrats on recovering the money and the not so subtle brag.

We had similar issues with Regions. Somehow someone got ahold of expired or lost/stolen card numbers of ours on multiple different occasions. They could never explain it and also couldn't explain why those were still valid card numbers, sometimes many years later, when we hadn't used them and in at least one case had reported the card number lost/stolen.
We got all of our money refunded, but after the third time this happened I decided it was probably a feature instead of a bug.

First, Regions is shitty for this. With USAA, someone paid their mortgage out of my checking account (about $3k), and USAA credited my account within 24 hours while they investigated. A transaction of $30k would have required a SAR be filled out on both the withdrawal and the deposit.
Some of you are in fantasy land. Y'all understand that "small" banks use most of the same backend tools and services for AML/KYC, identity verification, fraud detection, etc.?
Debit, or credit cards, if they have a Visa, MC or other "big" brand logo on them, are covered by the same fraud protections as every other card of any type with a logo on it, they're forced to in order to have the logo on the card. Not that this should have been card related anyway, since it was a wire transfer. The bank should have a record of the authorization and your probably forged signature on it.
Drop by the local secret service branch. They probably have nothing to do, and they are a member of the department of the Treasury.

OP, thanks for posting this information.
Glad you got your money back.
Debit cards are worthless.

I protect against that by not having any money in the bank to be withdrawn

It’s dumb. Checking acct with debit card is 100% most like to have fraud. Set up a money market that you can sweep funds over to the checking when you need them only.

Bank local baw. With folks you see at the grocery store and go to church with. Regions is obviously one of those too big to fail mega banks.
If you stay at Regions after that experience….whatever happens next is on you.
