With Central capturing its first state title in nearly 60 years and Zachary winnning 3 (or 4?) recently, why can’t the other schools surrounding B.R. (Ascension/Livingston) field teams that can compete on the statewide level?
Some of these schools have the resources/facilities, is it coaching or lack of talent development?

Dutchtown almost went to the Dome last year…

I think the Northshore underachieves more

I personally don’t understand the issues with Ascension and Livingston not being able to consistently compete at the highest level, some say it’s just to many kids spread out.. not sure on ascension but I think Livingston has some type of first choice enrollment for a few schools that could hurt.

If you live in BR.. you just understand the issues with those schools. To many intertwined issues to list

Agree, EBR public’s are done!
LP/AP seem to be stuck with a lack of good coaching

Madison Prep is on a trajectory to become the Edna Karr of Baton Rouge.

Even in the 80’s and 90’s, BR area schools like Broadmoor, Tara, Woodlawn, Belaire and Glen Oaks would generally underachieve.

Dutchtown got a gift last season to advance and they gutted this season by the new Prairieville Hurricanes .

Won't have the luxury of being the State's Largest school enrollment of over 2, 600 any longer.

If Walker ; Denham Springs and St Amant do get to the Playoffs. Most of the time they dont get very far.

Coach Simoneaux made all the difference in the world for Central! Now in just his 2nd year as their coach. It's a Belief mind set + Fist Fight Mentality esp. during the Playoffs.

It's truly sad Belaire (where i played) ; Broadmoor ; Tara ; Glen Oaks ; Capitol have become. Limited number of players + lack of parental support. Games are kinda somber ; or to see them on visiting side line

Central & Zachary could name their score vs these teams.

Madison Prep has gutted Capitol ; Glen Oaks and Istrouma(closed for a while) ; til Coach Sid stopped it ; then turned Istrouma around. Now he is Mayor of BR after being Central's coach! You cant make this stuff up!

Livingston just seems to be more focused on Baseball at that level. They spread out a ton of talent over the big 3 schools in live oak, Walker and Denham. Doyle as well..

Central while not in Livingston is right there as well..

Central and Zachary have also won baseball state championships more recently than the big AP/LP schools

They’re the only two ISDs in the state. There’s a reason they can name their score against the rest of BR public schools.

EBR forced bussing is what killed football in this area. Bussing kids all the way across town killed any type of school pride, and is what made a lot of parents enroll their kids into private schools.
Also the reason Central, and Zachary incorporated to start their own schools, and are able to keep the local kids local.

AP/LP benefitted from the forced bussing due to the flight out of EBR schools from those either couldn’t, or didn’t want to send their kids to private schools.

Central and Zachary had put tons of money into their athletic programs recently with good facilities from weight rooms to stadiums, to coaching staffs. It has leveled the playing field somewhat to be able to compete with the North La schools. They never had to deal with those issues, and it basically allowed those schools to become powerhouses.

Ascension Parish is watered down due to four 5A schools and one Class A Private school in the Parish east of the Mississippi River. It will be like that in all sports IMHO. Central and Zachary being able to branch off and form their own school districts have helped. Being a city school and the tax base Gonzales has, only East Ascension would have a chance to do that. But that would never happen in AP. I think the coaching is pretty good. It does not help that Catholic, Dunham, and even John Curtis picks out the real good players. I know for a fact that one of Catholic High's safety's was recruited to go to Catholic as he had to miss a District Middle School track meet for an in home visit from Catholic. 2 Running backs the last 2 years in AP MIddle School FB were recruited too.

North LA on sportsline could tell you all about Neville’s shenanigans…

St. George will become like Central, and Zachary soon as well. Once they can keep the local kids local, and not have to deal with the EBR mess it’ll only be a matter of time.

Great insight, never thought of the AP talent getting poached so regularly

To be honest: genetics. Baton Rouge has a significant population descended from Midwestern transplants as well as German immigrants. Those people tend to be significantly taller than the short Cajuns who settled in AP. Dutchtown has a greater percentage of “white flight” from BR, so they have more of that transplant stock than do EA or St. Amant, so they have been significantly better. The majority of the kids at EA and STA are simply too small for their teams to be consistently elite, especially when their stand-out talent is often poached by private schools like Catholic, U-High, and Parkview Baptist.
