First time watching this, it's an entertaining little Christmas movie. I wasn't expecting Sally Draper as a sexy villainess.

I was expecting it be a rental. 4 weeks from theatrical release to free stream has to be a new record since covid ended.

It was one of the biggest box office failure of Johnson's career. The studio is desperate to get money out of it.

I liked it for what it was.

Bigger failure than The Tooth Fairy, Planet 51 and Southland Tales?

I agree. My biggest problem with it was being over 2 hours. It was great for what it was, but should’ve been about 20 to 30 minutes shorter.

Just watched. Was pretty entertaining. I wouldn't watch with younger kids though. Lots of off color language and some pretty scary-looking monsters. It earned the PG13 (probably why it didn't have great box office returns tbh).

The reviews made it sound like one of the worst things ever produced. Honestly, I kind of enjoyed it...

I think it was originally planned to be streaming only but was so expensive they had to put it in theaters
yeah IMDB confirms this

The Amazon MGM film has grossed $164 million at the worldwide box office so far after originally being set as a streaming-only release.

According to Deadline, Red One was originally conceived as a straight-to-streaming release for Prime Video, but trade publication noted that Amazon MGM Studios opted for a wide theatrical release after the film did well in test screenings.
As a result, going theatrical with the film instead of streaming it off the bat clearly allowed Amazon MGM Studios to recoup some of its production costs. As long as the film maintains its legs, it will continue to earn money and please at-home viewers with the quick—and very timely—arrival on streaming.
They wanted a Christmas movie for their streaming service, anything they made in the box office was a bonus.

That’s what they get for listening to The Rock. This quote from him is hilarious now.

With Red One, our intention was to make a movie that you can enjoy on the biggest screen possible. Legitimately the biggest screens possible are IMAX. I was midway through shooting Red One and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched in the IMAX theater where Christopher Nolan watches and screens his movies. Him and Emma [Thomas], his wife. I even asked to let me sit where Chris sits. They said, 'Chris sits here.' I watch Oppenheimer. It was amazing, but I was thinking: 'Holy shite. Red One on this screen and with this technology could be game over.' I remember texting [director Jake Kasdan] a picture of my bare chest and a picture of the screen and we realized how cool [IMAX] would be.

We watched it last night with our 11 year old.
It was enjoyable in the moment, but also completely forgettable.

I thought it was enjoyable. Language did not bother me, but I could not help but think how stupid it was to include it in a movie targeted to kids. The movie probably makes a killing if they scale back the language and a few of the creatures. It could have been PG and made a lot of money, just one more example of not knowing your target audience.

Absolutely haha
I guess it's normal for a guy who spent the first half of his career in a speedo tho.
Still weird.

Christmas themed movies hit differently. Enjoyed this one. Also was surprised it was on Prime already.

The wife and I both liked it. J.K. Simmons as Santa, that's awesome. Chris Evans taking candy from a baby. It was funny, clever, well-cast, entertaining. What more do people want from a light-hearted Christmas comedy?
