With so many LSU players entering the portal, and so much negativity surrounding the portal, I wanted to say something about it.

Do you know how many amazingly talented high school athletes spend years on the bench of the college that recruited them, waiting for their “chance” while coaches prioritize the latest 5-star recruit or transfer? Without the portal, they’re stuck, unable to showcase their skills, grow, or even get meaningful film for the next level. The portal gives these players an option, an escape, and most importantly, a choice.

Think like the recruit instead of a fan. You only get one college career. Imagine being sidelined in a system that doesn’t prioritize your development, and your only options are to stick it out or quit altogether. The transfer portal allows players to take their future into their own hands, finding programs that want to invest in them. It empowers athletes to make decisions based on what’s best for their careers, academics, and personal growth.

And let’s not ignore this: the portal disrupts the NCAA’s power dynamics. For decades, the NCAA’s system funneled money through programs and institutions while athletes were left with little more than a scholarship—often at schools that didn’t value their full potential.

With the portal, players can seek out better opportunities, not just for playing time, but also for NIL deals, better facilities, and coaches who actually invest in their success. This isn’t a lack of loyalty; it’s self-determination in an industry that’s been exploiting players for too long.

The transfer portal levels the playing field. It’s not about disloyalty, it’s about fairness. If coaches can jump from school to school chasing millions of dollars, why can’t athletes have the same right to chase their dreams? The portal isn’t ruining college football; it’s giving athletes a chance to thrive, find the right fit, and truly maximize their potential.

Fans don’t have to like it and can choose to opt out of the madness at any point. Convince yourself that this will make fans have more passion for the game to keep advancing it. Fools gold. It’s doing just the opposite. TJ Finley will be with his 5th team in 6 years. That is becoming more the norm than not. That will be the death knell in the collegiate system in the not too distant future.

Your post is resting on the assumption that players always make the right decision when they transfer.

My passion for college football is decreasing. I’ll still watch it, but I’m not investing too much into it.

The extreme upper crust has been exploited. The other 95+% that doesn’t play professionally gets the scholarship, excellent medical care, great facilities, excellent meals, tutors, etc. Sorry, the backup QB at FIU isn’t exploited.

Generally the adults in the room have a different set of rules. It’s the same reason I can drink a coke or chew gum in front of my students and they can’t.

I believe in the portal but these were not the only options. You could transfer and sit out a year or move down and play immediately. But, I get the point. It’s the coaches job to find a better player every year. If he is successful, then the player is stuck. Or, a coach may just not like the player. I had teammates transfer to smaller
schools and then make the league. The current rules make it easier for those guys a better chance. If you are Ricky Collins, Colin Hurley, etc and Underwood signs and wins the job, under the old rules options were limited.

I have no problem with the portal or NIL. I have a problem with how the NCAA has allowed it with no rules or regulation. It is the Wild West and it is ruining my love for the game. With anything there should have been some boundaries put in place but instead they just allowed anything goes. IMO they have stained college sports and made it a money hungry business. There has to be rules and consequences at some point.

Do u also know, that once they get on campus and in training camp, they all have the same shot at starting? Josh Williams was a walk on, who ended up being a starter, so they all have the same shot at getting their chance. Yes the coaches will always be after the next 5 star, but it's what they do once they get there, that gives them their chance

It happens everyday at every level of sports. From pee-wee football to the NFL. The job of the coach isn't to prioritize your development, it is to build a team to win football games.

What the portal has done actually hurts player development as it hinders big time schools from stock piling talent and it limits heir time to do any developing. They now have basically one year to do this development, and ensure they keep the kids they feel are elite.

For the most part, schools are doing that and the kids choosing to leave just aren't good as they think they are and its not going to be any different at the next program.. There will always be exceptions and it seems about 10% of the players who enter the portal made the correct decision and actually improve their athletic standing.

The portal has only been a thing a few years. Assuming it remains as is, we will see a bigger sample size but I don't expect that number to change much. Kids who get D-1 offers have been told they are great all their life. Its tough to be told you actually aren't that good and make an effort to get better. It is a lot easier to listen to the guy on the phone from another program telling you you ARE still good and come play for him.

I understand Sage Ryan is in it that’s good news I’m tired of watching the other teams wrs and rbs run past him while he takes horrible angles every play. Maybe someone can put him in to fit their system tickled pink it won’t be us still trying to teach him.

As of a few days ago, 2700 players had entered the portal. That’s 25% of all college players. Last year, 30% of players in the portal went unsigned. So that means, if the percentages hold, that almost 1000 players who enter will never play D1 football again. Now tell me again why it’s leveled the playing field and is such a good thing?

Coaches sign contracts with liquidated damages clauses if they leave. Stop comparing them job hopping to the portal. It’s not the same

I don't agree with most of this because years ago a couple of good examples of guys that "stuck it out " started for one year and not only got drafted but both either started or played a lot in the NFL ( Debo Jones and Duke Riley ). Kids nowadays want everything now and if they don't get it now, think they are being wronged somehow and that is far from the truth. This portal and NIL has only enhanced this way of thinking. There's no more accountability, I'll just leave and go where someone is going to tell me I'm great even when you're screwing up. If you can't look inward and be totally honest with yourself and admit your wrongdoings ( and also accept criticism ), you going to have a long, difficult road in life. What this team needs is a leader like Devon White that called players out when they weren't putting enough time in the film room, weren't hitting the weight room enough or wanting to cause disruption amongst the team because they thought the coaches were being unfair.

Imagine quitting on your team almost every year even if you were a starter just to chase more money.

The transfer portal is a freaking shite show of epic proportions no matter how you want to spin it.

First academics now has little to do with nothing these days; the portal and NIL just lets the 4/5 star recruits showcase their talent so they can shop around to the next higher bidder ; maybe it can help some players some of the time but overall this destroys team chemistry and moral.

Coaches and universities spent a lot of time coaching on developing players that only leave to the next highest bidders the next year etc. This is upsetting the true fans of college football; fans are becoming apathetic towards college football and this system . The NCAA needs to get their crap together!!!

The portal has ruined college football/ thread. Not reading all of your entitlement speech. If the player is giving a shite effort then they will get shite results. All they will do is bring their laziness to another team

Yes, it is almost like those coaches have already gone through the proving grounds and cut their teeth with hard work and little $$. People don't understand that. It is not like the players (the most talented) are not going to be rewarded for their efforts and sacrifice. The ones that aren't talented enough (hint, 99.9% of the time it isn't the coaches holding them back) are still given the opportunity that most other college students don't have, and can come out with a degree and as a former player that can open up many doors. Unfortunately, everything has turned all short-term and there are very little intelligent, positive role models in their ears. Sadly, most are pushed by the parent (mother in a lot of cases) to jump around until their kid can hit that payday in the NFL, and share it with Mom.
