Power, Intimidation and the Resurrection of Trump’s Support for Hegseth

quote:

Just last week, Pete Hegseth was twisting in the wind.
President-elect Donald J. Trump’s choice to lead the Pentagon was battered by damaging headlines: Drinking. Extramarital affairs. An allegation of sexual assault, which he denied.
Republican senators — emboldened after tanking Mr. Trump’s first choice for attorney general, the scandal-ridden Matt Gaetz — were going public with their concerns. Mr. Trump was getting sick of hearing about it all, and he told confidants he was serious about picking Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida to replace him.
But within 48 hours,Mr. Trump had changed his mind. He was going to see if Mr. Hegseth could survive.
People close to the president-elect had been telling him that this was a moment that would test his power as he prepared to return to Washington. It would be catastrophic, they argued, if he allowed Republican senators, like Joni Ernst of Iowa, to obstruct his mandate.
This was about something more than Mr. Hegseth, they said.
The sequence that followed — resuscitating Mr. Hegseth in less than a week from dead man walking to a man with a real shot of being confirmed by the Senate — was a test case of power and intimidation in the Trump era.
It was a reminder of Mr. Trump’s ability to summon an online swarm, even while spending minimal personal capital of his own. It showed that he has at his disposal a powerful movement, which jumped into action once his desires became clear. And it highlighted the role of Elon Musk, who has bottomless wealth to enforce Mr. Trump’s desires.
This article is based on interviews with nearly a dozen people who have direct knowledge of how and why Mr. Trump salvaged Mr. Hegseth’s bid, at least for now. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a confidential process with the president-elect.

Trump was never backing off Hegseth. Trump wasn't ever picking Ron that is just wish casting.

Exactly.

NYT is trying to stoke division within the GOP.

The NYT doing EVERYTHING they can to ensure that the DOD remains riddled with DEI, is completely corrupt and burning through trillions of dollars with minimal accountability. The people who read the NYT are too ideologically possessed to even know that they are now supporters of the corrupt war machine, defense contractors, neocon war enthusiasts etc. They LITERALLY have no idea they are everything they think they hate.

DJT47 knows which RINO's are pedos and which have taken bribes. He knows who has used the congressional slush fund, who is on the Epstein and Diddy lists, and for what. They will vote his way to hold onto power just a little longer.

With that resume, he'd fit in better with the schlubs that do business under the capitol dome in DC.

But I will enjoy watching him clean house in the War Department.

Ron's future is going to be an ever-interesting situation. But holy living frick, can you imagine the regret he has daily of not listening to Daddy Don and taking a shot at the king? If he'd have just waited; just not have run when told not to... Or at the very least, withdrawing and kissing the ring...

Now he's stuck outside the MAGA ring after the biggest redemption story in the history of modern politics.

Hegseth is a knucklehead and easily Trump’s weakest pick. There were better ones and Ron would be so much better.

That said, I agree with the premise of the article that Trump has to flex on the RINOS or they will undermine him at every turn.

Conservatives across the board endured lawfare from the left. Maybe its time to see how that shoe fits on the other foot.

Have the DOJ\FBI look into these "journalists and editors". Get the IRS to look over the books as well.

Even if they did nothing wrong they can still be financially ruined. We didnt make up the rules of the game but we better start playing by them.

If the NYT doesn't like him then he must be the right guy. Every opinion they have is the wrong one. That you can bank on.
