Pellet Rifle Recommendations

Back in the day, every kid needed a Benjamin or Sheridan pellet rifle. I wore out several of them through the years. Looking for one to get a 7 yr old and wondering what's the gold standard these days for young fellas? I'm not opposed to a pump, but I know most of them now are crack barrels or have an air tank. I'm of the opinion the kid needs to sit there and frantically pump to reload while watching the squirrels run higher and higher up a tree after missing his first shot. Not sure if I'll put a scope on it or not. He shoots open sights bb guns and 22lr fine enough for a kid his age. Just looking for something to get him that he can do some can shooting and backyard hunting with for a few years. Thanks

Gamo Silent Stalker Whisper. 177 cal. gas operated (no spring) with scope. It's a squirrel eliminating machine.

Not sure of a pump, but I love my Diana 34

Benjamin .22 with a Hammers 3-9x40 scope.

Benjamin Trail NP XL in .22 cal. It’s a hoss and accurate! One cock nitro piston action, thumb hole stock, bit heavy but it’s a winner!
Oops, reread the OP and the nitro piston would not be feasible for a 7 yr old. It takes some strength to pump it.

Gamo Swarm Whisper 10x with the 10 round rotary magazine
I second this. Mine was super accurate, straight out of the box. The Umarex I had before it took at least 300 shots before it settled in. The 10 round magazines are pretty sweet, too. I ordered a second mag, and it stores in the stock ready to go. So I have 20 shots before I have to reload anything.

I started my grandson out on a co2 powered daisy. Went airsoft. PCP.
There are some very nice pneumatics. Replicate the real deal very well.
I suggest taking him to Cabelas and see what the little guy is into.
I spent a lot of time with my grandson. It’s good one on one time. Man to man…….. He will never forget those times

Based off recommendations here I purchased the Gamo Swarm Whisper. That’s the best $150 I’ve spent in a while. Highly recommend.

I like my Umarex Notos. One of the quietest PCPs and very accurate.
If I'm target practicing with a cardboard box in the backyard, the sound of the pellet hitting the cardboard is about the same noise level as the shot from the rifle.

I still have my first pellet gun.
He will remember his forever.
I suggest you buy a good quality wood stock one.
It’s one of my most cherished guns .

I bought a Hatsan off of Zon and was blown away by the finish and performance. Would HIGHLY recommend. Walnut stock and I think they go all the way to .40 cal.

I've got a Gamo I don't even touch anymore. Once I bought a Henry .22 I didn't have any need to the Gamo anymore.

Same with me for my Benjamin Franklin pistol from the 80's. Also have my dad's Benjamin Franklin 310 from the 60's.

I have one of these Benjamin Nitro Piston XL in .22cal. This is a real deal pellet gun.
You need to get at least a .22 cal or the squirrels are going to laugh at you unless you take them out with a perfect head shot.
Squirrels are much tougher than you think.
I also have a Benjamin Marauder PCP .22 cal, and this is also a squirrel killing machine.
We have tons of trees where I live, making for a target rich environment for squirrels. Never a dull moment.

They are tough, but my Dad killed hundreds of them when he was in his late 70’s and early 80’s with the Gamo .177 we bought him. This was before Gustav took out so many of the huge water oaks in his neighborhood. His garden will be an interesting archeological dig at some point in the future.
