Senator Joni Ernst, Republican of Iowa, signaled on Monday that she would not oppose Pete Hegseth’s bid for defense secretary, hinting at a turnabout after days of hectoring and threats by President-elect Donald J. Trump’s hard-right supporters who threatened political retribution if she failed to fall into line.
Only days after emerging from a private meeting with Mr. Hegseth sounding unconvinced about his fitness to lead the Pentagon, Ms. Ernst, the first female combat veteran to serve in the Senate and a survivor of sexual assault, indicated that a second sit-down had allayed her concerns.
And she suggested that a torrent of allegations against Mr. Hegseth that had put his candidacy in jeopardy — including sexual assault, sexual impropriety in the workplace, public drunkenness and fiscal mismanagement — might not be disqualifying unless his accusers came forward publicly.
“I appreciate Pete Hegseth’s responsiveness and respect for the process,” Ms. Ernst said in a statement after their meeting, adding that she had had “encouraging conversations” with Mr. Trump’s pick.
“As I support Pete through this process, I look forward to a fair hearing based on truth, not anonymous sources,” she added.
Ms. Ernst stopped short of promising to support Mr. Hegseth, but in sending a strong signal that she was favorably inclined, she appeared to clear away a major potential hurdle to his confirmation. At the same time, her shift suggested that Mr. Trump’s MAGA base was ready, willing and able to bully Republicans into submitting to his desires.

He’s going to get confirmed. This is weaker sauce than Kavanaugh and trump stood by him when many wanted him not to. They will not allow a repeat of that. Kash will fly through easy

Yes. However according to The Times’ report, Penelope Hegseth wrote, “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego.

There was no evidence that Kavanaugh was ever even in the same room with the Blaisey-Ford creature. Even her school friends, some of whom were lifelong Dem partisans, whom she claimed she had confided in at the time denied and found it laughable that she was ever at a party with the cool kids. On the other hand the rape claim against Hegspeth seems dubious but he did sleep with the woman.

Pete is a horrible husband and cheater. Omfg let’s clutch our pearls as if that matters at all to his proposed job. The “rape” is the least credible rape accusation I’ve ever seen and her name is out there megyn Kelly knows it but won’t publish it unless she comes forward and claims she has made another false allegation before him. Pete’s lawyer alleged on fox they’ll be suing her for breaking nda either way.

Who is melting, lol? I wrote that. I think he will be nominated and that I think that would be a very good sign. That does not seem like melting? I also wrote that the email from his mother was disturbing. Anyone who reads that email and isn't a little uncomfortable is either lying or is a boob.

Anyone that looked into this knows it was a whore at a bar that he hooked up with ….not rape. I’m sorry but if a woman follows you to your room after drinking at the bar in a hotel then she’s doing that with intent.

I think the character issue could be reasonably argued but the fake rape claims can't be rewarded.
