The Cobra is going to Cooperstown

Dave Parker has been elected to the Hall of Fame
quote:
The announcement was made Sunday night, with Parker joined by slugger Dick Allen in being elected by the Hall's Veterans Committee. The pair will be part of the Class of 2025 along with any potential inductees from the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot, which is scheduled to be announced in January.
Nicknamed "The Cobra," Parker followed an outstanding prep career at Cincinnati's Courter Tech by showing his all-around skills with the Pittsburgh Pirates before returning to the Queen City to sign with the Reds as a free agent following the 1983 season. In his four years with the Reds, Parker once again became one of the best hitters in the league, finishing second in National League MVP voting in 1985 and fifth in 1986. In both seasons, Parker earned a spot on the NL All-Star team and won Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards.

Continuing to water down Cooperstown

A dominate player in my formative years. Without looking up his stats, he was the best if not one of the best players in the game for a stretch and had a lengthy career as a power hitter on some great teams. I have no idea if he is stat worthy, but personally, I feel like he is a HOF player. I feel his attitude and disposition cost him selection over the years.
EDIT
Looked up his stats and was surprised he only hit 339 HR's over 19 yrs. Did have a late career resurgence with Reds, but I would've guessed he had better numbers than he did with the Pirates in his prime. Shows you what nostalgia can do to you. He was also a heavy user of cocaine, the 70-80s version of performance enhancing drugs.

I've never heard of him, but looking at his stats, they are definitely worthy of Hall of Fame debate. 2 time batting champ, 3 time golden glove winner, MVP winner. 4 top 5 finishes in MVP voting.
Solid career.
Solid career.

Did he play for the As for a little while in the late 80s?

I won’t say anything about that, you may be too young. Have you ever heard of the “We Are Family” Pirates?

Yeah, he was close to 40 by then and a shell of his prime. He still hit over 20 HRs one of those years though.

This board is so weird.
They complain about dudes who make the hall b/c they had long careers and accumulated magic number stats like 3000 hits but then turn around and complain when a guy gets in who was dominant for a half decade stretch but decided to hang it up instead of chasing the stats that would have long ago guaranteed he was in the hall. He could have easily hung around as a DH for a couple more years on bad teams and had a very good shot at 3k hits.

Won a ring with them in ‘89

In his prime, definitely HoF-worthy, but had some bad years. Same with
Dick Allen.
And I saw them both play.

Had an absolute canon from RF. Solid player.

Yeah I thought so. I was a fan of them back then but I was only 8/9. I remember getting all of their cards and thought I remembered him.

Great player in his day. Now get Dwight Evans in there.

That’s because they don’t really have any standards here. It’s all bias, the numbers are used or not used based on who they like. Parker, for obvious reasons, will be a favorite here.
