Yeah, I know: yet another watch thread. My 15 year old Seiko Kinetic diver finally died. Costs more than it’s worth to change out the capacitors.

Recommendations for a diver watch, $500 max budget. Good with automatic or quartz, sapphire crystal face, stainless steel bracelet. Had my eye on a Tissot via Jomashop. Hamilton khaki automatic looked snazzy, but a touch out of budget.

Thanks in advance.

Dave portnoy’s watches are marked down to $500 from $2500. Make of that what you will

Bro get you a seiko. Or a seiko mod. With the latter the possibilities are endless.

San Martin will
Also make you quite happy.

Really like the Citizen Promaster divers. They come in both Eco-Drive and automatic.

Citizen, Seiko, Orient and microbrands are the best bang for the buck in that price range. Hamilton, Bulova, Tissot, Glycine, Edox, and Mido are more Swiss if that floats your boat.

Jomashop is an excellent place to get solid discounts with those brands and at the price you are looking for.

Under $50

Casio Duro Quartz. great watch for the money
Addiesdive with Seiko NH35

Under $100

Steeldiver
Pagani Design with Seiko NH34, 35, or 36
Invicta with Seiko NH35

Under $200
You may find a San Martin
Quartz Tissot
Heimdallr
Tactical Frog

Under $500
aforementioned Seikos
Auto Tissots
Hamiltons

personally, I buy more vintage stuff. Have a late 50s Zodiak Seawolf with white Bakelite bezel I'd sell for $500. But I wouldn't trust a 60 year old watch to be water tight, lol.

This. A Seiko Prospex retails for $595, can easily get it at least 25% off. For that you get 200M water resistance, automatic movement and sapphire crystal.

NH35 if it is just a date model, NH36 of it is a day date watch.

It could be in inexpensive fairly easy DIY project but it could also be a PITA that might not physically work.

The first thing is would the case accommodate a NH3X movement, the NH series movements may be thicker.

Then you have to find or cobble a movement holder since there is a good chance the standard movement holders for the NH movements won't fit perfectly.

It is almost certain you will have to remove the dial feet and attach the dial with dial dots

You will have to size and switch the stem to a NH stem

I didn't check but there is also a good chance you would have to replace the hands as well since it is unlikely they would also fit the NH movements canon pinion.

That is a lot of work and likely a big PITA to get a 15yo watch back up and running.

Don't get me wrong that is exactly the kind of project I would tackle for the fun of it but I wouldn't want to pay a watchmaker to try unless the watch had sentimental value and if it did I would just get the cap replaced.

Costco has a Seiko diver for $179 last summer. I bought it and it works great.

I used to be a watch guy and life got a little too fun to worry about losing one at a hotel far away or getting stolen, also in the water a fair bit so I converted to Seiko SKX007/009. It finally died and the collectors are driving the prices on ebay up too high. Was at Costco few days later and couldnt' believe they had a nice automatic Seiko diver for $179.

Also it has a display back which I enjoy looking through.
