Why play a big OOC game week 1 in College Football?

Obviously with 12 teams, you don’t need the “big” win to split hairs on best teams if you’re already one of the best in your conference anyway. (The Georgia win over Clemson didn’t really help Georgia at all and that loss hurts Clemson, for example)

But looking at the chaos with transfer portal today the real reason it’s stupid is because this is the “new normal” of college football

Your own team will be breaking in new transfers who, even if talented, are playing with new teammates, coaches and a new scheme. And the team you are facing you will have no game tape on because they could have a transfer QB and transfers at several key positions you can’t truly prepare for.

With parity and 1/3rd of your roster new every year, teams need easy ramp up games to work kinks out. You can see it play out this year and it’s only going to get worse going forward.

Sure it helped Georgia. Had Georgia lost, it certainly would have hurt them.

How'd playing all those cupcakes early work out for Ole Miss in the end? Blow out cupcakes, and then boom... play a very middling Kentucky and get beat. I'd argue that playing tough OOC games early actually prepares you better for the conference.

So your fans have something fun to do/place to travel to?

It’s good for the brand to be in the spotlight opening week?

You’re cashing a mad paycheque for doing so?

I like that LSU plays big OOC games week 1 for the reasons you listed above. What I don't like is the losing streak we have in those games.

So do it week 2 or 3, not 1. Give yourself game tape on the team your playings new portal players and rotations, and give your transfers a warm up

I assume playoff money is better than week 1 OOC money

No idea.

But it’s bad when you lose every year.

Me too honestly. I’d rather either enjoy a good win against a name opponent or see how and where we need to improve vs. beating Northwestern St. 63-7.

Only thing i don’t like are the neutral site games.

That goes both ways.

Indiana is indirectly getting punished for not playing anyone of significance OOC (they actually backed out of a Louisville game scheduled this year).

The real enigma is Penn State who played no one of consequence outside of their conference and had a relatively weak in-conference schedule to boot - a combination of pretty good analytics and a decided Big Ten bias on the committee has them sitting where they are.

It's not the big OOC losses that are stumping the SEC teams this year. LSU at 10 - 2 with a loss to SC and, say, wins against Florida and A&M and a less bad loss against Alabama would be sitting about 7th or 8th in the rankings right now.

Oregon is getting the benefit of the doubt for beating Boise; Georgia for pounding Clemson; Texas is probably getting a bit of tailwind now that Michigan beat OSU (again); etc.; etc.

It's the complete shite losses to Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Arkansas, etc.

Don’t teams usually make a ton of money from these games?
Aren’t we headed to model of “revenue” sharing to pay players?

Wouldn’t it be better to make more money? Not everything is about helping a teams playoff resume

Didn't work for Georgia. They looked like shite in their first two conference games.

Indiana is very safely in the playoff field. Had they played and lost to Louisville, they probably wouldn't be.

The short answer is because they bring in money.

LSU with wins over USCe and OM, and having played a cupcake in week 1 would be right around 12th right now.

The OP is correct. Playing any tough OOC games is stupid.

For some reason, Alabama has scheduled two major OOC opponents in the future. Some of these are tough (or at least they were at the time we scheduled them). Not sure what we have to gain out of scheduling two major OOC games like this considering all an SEC team needs is 1.
