Have a group of buddies looking to make a guys trip to Costa Rica next year. Catching a Rooster Fish on my bucket list. Looking for any info on places to stay, charters and any other info you could recommend.

Most people will say Los Suenos, but I'm not into the resort style and Jaco is a shitehole, unless you're looking for uh...certain things.
Stayed in Manuel Antonio in an AirBnB and fished out of Quepos several years ago to knock rooster fish off my bucket list.
Actually heading back down there in two weeks, staying in same area (walking distance to restaurants/bars in town) right near the park. Looking for sails this time, instead of roosters inshore. It's an awesome area, IMO.
ETA: it's an easy drive from SJO on better roads than we have in MS/LA. So much other stuff to do in every direction as well.

I agree with speckledawg. Los Suenos is nice, but you’re basically staying at a golf resort. We stayed in Manuel Antonio and fished out of Quepos. Used bluehorizoncostaruca.com for our booking. They have a lot of connections to Louisiana people and treated us very well.

Highly recommended.
However, watch out the local hole in the wall restaurants.
On my honeymoon, I nearly died of food poisoning.
I ordered the Snook, which tasted like dirty mullet and calamari in chorizo sauce. I am not sure which one did it, but I thought I was dying for about 2 days but toughed it out in our room until it passed.
Otherwise, I love that area of Costa Rica.

^^^This, Marina Pez Vela has good charters. Look up Los Monos Sportfishing.

The wife and I are heading to Playa Flamingo in a month to catch a Rooster fish as well.
I fished Los Suenos as well a few years back. If you stay on the resort its very nice. We stayed in Jaco, and its rough to say the least. (but also fun as long as you stay in a large group.) I wanted to stay somewhere a little more authentic and less traveled( and less hookery). Playa Flamingo has a nice downtown area with restaurants walking distance from most AirBNB's. We have an SUV rented for the duration of the trip. We also have an ATV guided tour as well as a surfing trip planned.

Haven’t been in a few years but we stay around Ocotal, Guanacaste and have had some great fishing trips around there.
Sail fish, marlin, tuna have all been caught. Even saw a couple whales one time as they were migrating.

We went last thanksgiving and stayed at Los Suenos. Yes, its a resort and if I went back I'd probably try Manuel Antonio and fish out of Quepos. Or might try Tamarindo.
BUT, for our trip as first timers, Los Suenos has the whole Maverick fleet. We went with DreamboatsCR and just me and the girlfriend went 10/14 on Sails, 14 Mahi, and 4 Yellowfin.
The Marriott at Los Suenos is very average, but if you rent a condo in the resort there are multiple decent restaurants. Costa Cat runs its tour boat out of there and Maverick can set you up with a bunch of other activities. The downside is you are somewhat limited to the resort itself.

depends on where you want to go.
Beautiful resort and great fishing fleet. Maverick can book your other tours as well, zipline, whatever. Agree if its first time you should go there and let them handle everything.
Stayed in Quepos for honeymoon 20 years ago. Nice new marina now similar to Suenos, but without the rest of the resort. Small town vibe.
Check out the Manuel Antonio area in Quepos. State park and active volcano up in the mountain.
Gulfito further South....Tamarindo further North, both cool towns.

My 10yr old son and I got our first sails last week. Awesome trip out of Marina Paz Vela. The marina has gotten even nicer since I was last there 6yrs ago. Much pricier than restaurants/bars/shopping elsewhere in the area, but cool spot to check out the boats or grab dinner/drinks after fishing.

Went to Zancudo Lodge in May.
Unbelievable place, can find info on YouTube. Back was hurting from so many roosters.

Y’all in shape? Should go to surf…then take a couple of half day fishing trips. Mal Pais has a variety of housing and surf camp options. To me that peninsula is the most beautiful part of Costa Rica.
