Have you or anyone you know been to a previous launch? I’m looking for first-hand experience to guide me as to the best place to view a launch and recommendations for a place to stay overnight.

Secondhand information is welcome as well as all other comments.

South Padre Island is supposed to be a great viewing area.

Get within a mile or so to see, hear the event. I watched one from 8 miles and not so good

I found a place called raptor roost that is 4 miles away and is the closest spot to view a launch. It is $200 per day per person and you must camp overnight and be there by noon the day before the launch. Also there are no hook ups or any accommodations. You can bring a generator.

Well I regret not ever going to see a shuttle launch or anything from Florida. Boca Chica is only about a 10 Hour Dr. so there’s no excuse. I’m going to do whatever it takes to get there this time.

I may even drive there next week just to check it out. Or maybe I’ll go for Christmas because I need to get out of here anyway.

It’s worth the trip and if you can swing getting down there just to visit you should try to go. The idea that you can literally drive a few hundred feet away from the most powerful rocket ever built and then nearly walk up to it is crazy. I took my boys down there before IFT 4. Drove and parked along the hwy at different spots to look at the faculties and then parked on the beach and walked over the dunes to where the launch pad is located. Afterwards we hung out on the beach and did a little surf fishing - easy way to spend a day or half a day. We stayed in south padre and spent a day down there and went to the jetties. This is where I would probably look for a spot in launch day, but there are plenty of places to pull over on the side of the road and watch from. I want to get down for a launch, but the work schedule hasn’t worked out to make it.

Thanks for the info. I’m sure I’m gonna drive down there from Baton Rouge in the next week or two just to check things out. I’m also thinking about renting a camper and going to the raptor roost.

Can you park and van camp somewhere along the beach?

This place was mentioned in the video I linked, it appears that they have availability for IFT 7.

Rocket Ranch

Holy shite, they have emergency flame trenches in case of a rapid unscheduled disassembly.

Nice. I’ve been watching him since the first launch. I haven’t seen this one.

Looks like some do based on that video but they clear the beach for launches.

Keep us posted if you go and review it for us. I hope to do this eventually. We tried to hit a few NASA launches while at Disney with the kids but each time we went they scrubbed the mission to a later date.

I've been lucky enough to see a shuttle launch and a SpaceX Falcon night launch.

Incredible events.
Can't wait to add this to the list.

Will do. I am of the understanding that they may try to launch before the end of this year so as not to use up a license for next year.

I’m going to Rocket Ranch. I spoke to the guy and it seemed legit so I’ll check it out. I may rent an RV to stay overnight.

Still not sure of a launch window which could come before the end of the year. Hopefully on Christmas eve or day. That’s how I would like to spend my Christmas this year.
