A few weeks ago, DOTD finally completed work on a traffic circle in Thibodaux where Jackson Street meets Highway 20. So to inform drivers of what lane they should be in DOTD put this string of signs near the circle.

One glaring issue to me is that it is way too close to the circle to figure out which lane you need to be in, and why not put one large green sign with illustrations.

Heard they had at least 20 something wrecks there already.

Thats the stupidest place to put one of those circle jerk thingys. Way too many roads connect there especially with Jackson being a truck route. Horrible idea from dot and idiot mayor to agree with it.

Isn’t that one of the main reasons to put in a traffic circle?

To those who don’t know how to drive around one, when entering the circle, the right lane can only turn right at the first exit or go straight through the second exit. You cannot go to the 3rd or 4th exit from the outside lane. If you’re entering from the inside lane, you cannot turn right at the first exit, but can go straight to the second exit or keep going around the circle and exit at the 3rd or 4th exit if you want.

If you’re entering from the outside lane and want to go straight to the second exit and a car is coming around the circle in the inside lane, don’t assume you’re good to enter because you’re in different lanes. That car can keep going straight and cross over your lane to exit. You have to make sure both lanes are clear before you enter. If you’re just turning right, you don’t *have* to wait for the inside lane to pass, but it’s a good idea because you don’t know if they’ll stay in their lane like they’re supposed to when they exit.

Also, once you know the rules, don’t assume others do. Anticipate that they don’t and be prepared for them doing what you know they’re not supposed to do. There are many traffic circles where I live and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve avoided an accident by anticipating someone potentially doing the wrong thing.

Traffic circles are significantly more efficient than stop lights. Also, much safer. They do have more overall wrecks but injuries, fatalities, and overall vehicle damage is much lower than traditional “t intersections”.

Carmel, IN has a ton of these and it is has very efficient traffic flow.

Carmel is also highly educated, affluent, and...uhh...homogeneous. Not to mention they've been having lots of traffic circles there for about 35 years.

There will definitely be growing pains in Thibodaux.

Unless the circle is large, like the one in Alexandria, I've never seen the need for more than one lane. I've actually seen the double lanes cause issues in smaller circles because it becomes a free-for-all with people switching lanes or ignoring them.

Looks like it was done by committee and the result was a confusing compromise.

Yes but normally it’s just an intersection of 2 two lane highways (4 way stop).

This you have a 4 lane blvd with median in middle going north to south, have a 2 lane street (18 wheeler route) coming in from northwest connecting to head south. Same 18 wheeler route connects coming from south to northwest. Also have regular 2 lane roads connecting east and west. Everyone said it would be a clusterfrick even the contractor building it.

People have a hard time navigating the one by Nicholls, can’t imagine how bad this one is.

lol, when that one first opened up I know someone who drove straight thru it “jumping” the median in middle. She had no idea it was there.

So this has been a very hot topic in town. They have had 17 wrecks thus.

It’s astounding how many people here don’t know how to work a roundabout.

Part of the issue is northbound and southbound traffic here always had the right of way. These idiots still think they have the right of way. You have a large number of people coming northbound on canal and getting into Jackson (have to cross southbound traffic) these southbound folks aren’t stopping so it causes people to stop in the middle of the circle.

Another issue is there is no lights here at night.

My proposal to fix this is they put an officer here 24/7 writing tickets to people not using this correctly until the problem corrects itself. They are so concerned about dui’s but ignore basic traffic issues like the plague.

Hell. The stop light at canal and 5th has been out for a month. What’s going on with that!?!

Eta: this circle plan was happening way before Kevin got into office.

Y’all just wait till they replace the bridge on canal. It’ll take ten years to cross the bayou.

Thibodaux baws to the DOTD:

“You spin me right 'round, baby
Right 'round, like a record, baby
Right 'round, 'round, 'round
You spin me right 'round, baby
Right 'round, like a record, baby
Right 'round, 'round, 'round”
