Found a cool new YouTube channel where an Australian couple is restoring a 105 room French château completed in 1788. It’s classified as a Monument Historique but it was abandoned and the roof began to collapse.

The team recreated statues for the hand shaped slate roof off of the destroyed originals that had toppled to the ground.

They even interview the daughter of some of the last servants that worked there before it was abandoned. Her mother was cook and her father the gardener.

I can't imagine how many millions of francs that cost so far. It's beautiful though.

Looks like every other shotgun house I've seen in Mississippi & Louisiana but just a little bigger.

Worth it, it is our history as caucasians.

The archives and original plans were legit. Sometimes with these chateaus I can't help but think it would be easier to just build a new one. The video about the secret room s and staircases for the servants was interesting as well.

These kinds of stories should always come with a disclaimer to let us know the real score. Are these really average people putting their livelihood on the line for a million-to-one shot, or is it more like “My husband is a VP of a multinational corporation, and I’m a trust fund baby with an interest in interior design. We’re “risking it all” to restore this beautiful French chateau.”

Looks cool. The best restoration channel I’ve seen so far is Martijn Doolaard. He restores an old stone summer house in the Italian alps. It’s long but so worth it.

I watched the whole video to see if it would show anything with the roof, as I'm in the business, and it did. I'm shocked they went thru the expense of replacing the slate roof and didn't use underlayment. That roof will leak at some point.

Did they make a synthetic underlayment in the 1700s? Contractors these days have no idea about true craftsmanship.

Why do we have to keep score? Let us all just enjoy the process and stop worrying about their bank accounts. They clearly DNGAF about cost and that let’s us see what it really takes to do a craftsman level restoration.

I do enjoy the process and I think it’s a wonderful thing they’re doing. But the title of the video is literally “We risked everything to save this 105 room crumbling French château”. Seems a little dramatic and clickbait-ish once you watch the video and see these people are well-funded. Just seems a little disingenuous, that’s all. And I realize I’m 100% nitpicking.
