All the talk about the 25-06 thread some said we should have a thread. Rokslide has a good one but figured I would start with one from several years back. I have several more I will update when I’m bored. Hopefully can contribute one with more details in a few weeks.
Daughter sitting with me as I watched him through binos, mule kicked and death dash.
6.8 spc 120gr hornady sst box speed of ~2400fps
~80yd shot broadside on a 160# buck.
He ran about 70yd with minimal blood trail

Dont need a blood trail if it drops then and there.

Not necessary, everyone knows .338 winmag is the only acceptable round for white tail.

I didn’t do the greatest analysis on the last one I killed but it was a young buck, ~50 yards. 6.5 Grendel 129 grain accubond long range. Behind the shoulder. Decent exit, easy enough to follow blood trail, went about 40 yards. Exactly what I was looking for in the youth rifle.

223 federal fusion
About 75yard shot broadside you can see the hole in the first pic, deer ran 30yds or so and piled up bullet was stuck on the far side skin and if I remember right only shed 10grains or so and had mushroomed to about .500 [/img]

I didn't take pics, but I obliterated the heart on one Saturday, it still ran 60 yards. That was with a .45 cal muzzleloader round. Other times they just fall dead. One time I hit one a little low, no exit, it ran 10 yards and I think it must have died from breaking its neck as it busted his arse jumping over some brush, because he died right there but later we found no blood, not even in the chest cavity. So, I don't know. Sometimes they run possessed, sometimes they don't.

Years ago I shot my first buck with a .270 win. 130gr trophy bonded bear claw. Perfect heart shot, ~110yards. It didn’t look like the bullet expanded at all. There may have been some drops of blood but the woods were flooded so that didn’t help, but I was able to follow the water splashes for 50 yards where I found him dead.

I’ve had a lot of success with .308 165 grain fusions on different deer as well. Good exits and blood trails for the ones I needed to track. They’re leaving my 16” barrel at around 2,550 fps, and I think most of my shots on deer with them have been anywhere from 100 and 270 yards.

I also shot my first 8 point at ~15 yards from about 30’ in a tree with a 300 saum 165 gr core lokt. It opened the side of the rib cage up big enough for me to see red as I shot. Quartering away, bullet went in high at the top of the rib cage and was found in the neck hide on the other side, near the collarbone area. Ran about 80 yards but left a blood trail I could follow with my binoculars

I don’t generally take pics but here’s some descriptions of the last few. Most of my shots on whitetail are neck shots, which has a 100% DRT success rate with a wide varieties of calibers and projectiles. For recent boiler room shots:

150gr nosler acubond from a .308. Cow elk at about 125, quartering hard towards. Ideal shot placement, bullet went through all the good stuff and was caught against the hide on the far side. I can’t remember what it weighed, I’ll look for my notes. Elk went a short distance and crashed.

Pronghorn, 80 yards facing towards. 165gr SST from a .30-06. Shot entered low in the front chest and exited behind the right front leg. Buck went about 60 yards and crashed. Did not pull heart/lungs, but I’d guess 1 lung obliterated and maybe got some heart. Shoulder was pretty trashed.

Pronghorn 250 yards slight quarter towards. 140gr nosler BT at about 2625 from a 6.5 creed. Double lung, pass through, went about 30 yards and crashed.

Whitetail doe, 75 yards broadside. 100gr nosler BT from a .260 at 2245. Pass through, Both lungs+some heart/arteries. Lots of blood, chunks of lung. Deer went about 15 yards, failed to clear a fence and then fell over to die. A little meat loss, maybe a couple pounds.

Whitetail doe, 180 yards, broadside. 80gr TTSX pushed hard in a .243. Double lung. Deer ran about 100 yards, jumped a fence and hit the ground dead on the other side. Pass through. Enough blood I could have followed it if I needed to but nothing crazy.

3 years ago I shot a 10 point at 70 yards with a 300 BLK, 110 gr V-Max. He flipped over on his back, straightened his legs and rolled over dead. No exit would but his insides were jellied. Sorry, no pics.

Shot a doe and a buck two years ago with 6.5 Grendel at 35-40 yards. Doe ran 10 yards and crumpled, buck two steps and down. ELD-X on both. Exit wounds both times.

Last year shot a doe at 20 yards with a .243 using Federal 100 grain, Power Shok. She took one step and folded. Definitely exit wound.

.50 BMG if you really want to put em down with no hassle. Whitetail are super tough animals.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a negative experience from nosler ballistic tips. I need to try some of those.

Why is the .260 velocity so low? I thought they were faster than creeders and you have a very light bullet there.

105mm air burst is the definitive round for quick kills on whitetail deer.

This reminds me of the guy on here who was shot in the neck with a deer round. Truly incredible that he survived that. I was always kind of a believer in the hydrostatic shock theory but not after reading his story.

I can't imagine sacrificing the neck roast, it is a top 3 meal from a deer. From big ones we get 2 decent sized roasts. The texture and taste are fantastic, I prefer it over a beef roast and it's leaner.

Crock pot? Never tried because it looks like it has a lot of sinewy strands. I usually just grind the neck but may try on the next one.

A neck roast low and slow is some damn good eating. I saw a post on here the other day where a poster said he neck shoots so he does not loose any meat. I did not reply, but was perplexed.

I have only tried once and it was a buck in full rut. Had to throw it out.
