I'm very encouraged by our defense. Here's why....

In the last three loses we were very much in these games well into the third quarter. Our defense, made up of mostly mid level talent with one or two exceptions, kept us in these games against mostly top level talent. There comes a time in each of these games when the defense can no longer keep up the pace. If the offense had done their job, the points that our defense did allow would have been enough to win these games.
Give Baker a chance. When he gets better players they will perform even better.

Baker is not the issue. Definitely can use more true SEC caliber defensive players though.

especially Safeties

Baker has a built-in excuse right now.... time will tell if he's the man for the job or not.

Swinson & Zy are probably our 2 best, and they'll be gone next year. Ouch!

had to convert those opportunities for INTs.

My only gripe. Lagway was not good, but made a few big time throws at the right time

Swinson is kind of one-dimensional but I'd still call him a bright spot. Weeks too, although more talent at safety and the other LB spots would go a long way in hiding his slow feet.

BK has a ton of work to do in the portal on the defensive side of the ball this offseason.

This x1000 … both dropped interceptions turned into points for UF.

Have no idea what the PFF grades were from Florida, but to my untrained eye Jardin Gilbert looks horrible. Consistently takes bad angles, looks slow, and is always missing tackles. He is a major weak link on this defense.

Regardless of how your defense plays when the offense does not score and your QB turns the ball over it will change the game and kills the momentum. Great QB plays are the key to success.

Below is what I see for next year minus any Portal additions. Younger but probably more talented.

Geo Paez - Dom McKinley
Jacobian Guillory - Jacobian Guillory (jahkeem Stewart back up hopefully)
Savion Jones - Gabriel Reliford
Dashawn Swinson - Dawshawn Womack
Whit Weeks - Whit Weeks
Greg Penn - Davon Keys?
Zy Alexander - DJ Picket
Ashton Stamps - Ashton Stamps
PJ Woodland - Kade Phillips (recent 5 star)
Jardin Gilbert - DaShawn Spears
Sage Ryan - I don’t know
Major Burns - I don’t know

This class will greatly change the athleticism and talent on defense especially at CB and LB. Bo has 4 DTs & Peoples has 2 very athletic edge guys. Stewart would make this D line class complete giving us a big End, Eventually i think he plays both E & T. I like the DT Zion(6-4/330) We could play 6-7 next year. Guillory, Suggs, Washington, Mckinley, Breaux, Zion could all play. We desperately need the infusion of Ross, Atkins & Singleton speed & athleticism at LB. If we can land 2 Safeties and an impact End in the portal to go with Womack, Reliford & RS Fr CJ Jackson I honestly think we are on our way next year defensively but we need 2 game ready Safeties

Stamps overpursued on that final touchdown run and didn’t fill the gap, which allowed for the long run.

It’s a problem that’s happened several times this year, many of which resulted in long TD runs. At some point, it gets hard to know where exactly to place the blame. Surely we’ve coached this…

are the players just not grasping these things because they have low football IQ? Or are we not coaching the little things well enough?

Both might apply and often it is a mixture of the two.

but any decent DC can be effective with great talent.

The true mark of a coach is what he doe with lesser talent. Make up for the lack of horses with scheme and unpredictability to keep the offense guessing.

Hell, even I could be a good DC is I had a roster full of elite players.

Lagway has shown good touch on the deep ball.

Realistically, aside from the play of Alexander, LSU benefitted greatly from Lagway being unable to run. Had he been able to do so this game likely isn't very close.
