If tweet fails to load, click here. One of the single best things that could happen, IMO.

There isn’t anywhere close to enough votes for this in Congress.
A House with a 6-10 seat majority can’t pass it, and the filibuster looms in the Senate.

Noooo but he can not give them any funds to operate and basically have a stripped down group of cat ladies yelling at the wall.
From Grok,
“- What Could Happen: If Trump were to push for dismantling the Department of Education:
- Program Reallocation: Functions like student loans might be transferred elsewhere, possibly to the Treasury Department or another agency, while civil rights enforcement could move to the Justice Department.
- Block Grants: Funding could potentially be given to states as block grants with fewer federal strings attached, which aligns with the idea of returning education control to the states.
- Challenges: Any move to abolish or significantly reduce the Department would face legal, logistical, and political hurdles. The department administers critical programs like Pell Grants, Title I, and IDEA, which are integral to many students' education, especially those in low-income areas or with disabilities.
In essence, Trump could legally and politically attempt to influence or reduce the role of the Department of Education, but outright elimination would be unlikely without substantial political capital and a shift in Congressional support.”

He does not need congrss to shut down the department of education. It is an institution that is not provided for by the constitution. Andrew Johnson made it up.
"Presidential reorganization authority permits the president to divide, consolidate, abolish, or create agencies of the U.S. federal government by presidential directive, subject to limited legislative oversight"

Yes he does. It wasn’t created by the executive.

The DOE was created by Congress in 1980

The people who work for LaDOE and BESE are shitting bricks, bc now they will have to do their jobs without having the Fed to blame for everything.

The department of education is just used to force Marists DEI ideology onto public schools and if they don't comply the schools don't get federal money.

Why? The Republicans in the House and Senate will save them. They will not allow Trump to get rid of the DOE.

It’s not a popular move even if it is the correct one. No surprise the House won’t go for it. There’s too many inherently vulnerable Republicans in blue states for that.
Senate filibuster makes something like that impossible even if all 53 of them are in favor. Which won’t happen anyway.
Ultimately, it’s not worth the political capital. There are other, actually attainable goals to pursue with this Congress.

Can’t Trump do something about the Marxist ideology
Seems like that’s way more attainable

Look at the basic skills taught in schools- reading, writing, science and mathematics.
Now look at when the Department of Education, and show me where students have statistically improved their scores in any one of those subjects since the DoE's formation.
You can't. Because they haven't. The DoE is just another government grift. There's also a strong debate to be had on the efficacy and overall results of compulsory education. We rank "near the bottom" in education globally because our geopolitical competitors do not mandate education beyond our middle-school equivalency. Their kids who aren't scientifically or mathematically inclined go straight to work and at an earlier age. The skills and habits you develop on the job are far more important than a piece of paper that says "You did it!", and they develop those skills at an earlier age.
There is a converse to this as well, but I think the topic is worth of discourse and deep discussion.

Shut it down and replace it with nothing.

Worrying about reelection and political capital are two of the main reasons nothing ever gets done. Sad.

This needs to happen. Public education is bottom of the barrel.
My kid is leaning in 1st grade private school what his cousin is learning in 5th grade public school.

That would be a large sum of money going straight to school systems. Currently for every dollar taxed I bet local schools get a dime after the Feds get through with it.

Indeed it is. Perpetual election cycles is something that the founders didn’t foresee. But that’s reality with the two year terms.
The House’s window to legislate is about 10 months total before they’re all campaigning again. Trump’s term is basically over 18 months from now if the GOP can’t hold the House after the midterms.
There are, however, legislative goals that can be accomplished in the first term without ensuring a democratic takeover of the house in 2026. Eliminating Dept of Ed just isn’t one of them.

filibuster
Needs to go, that is an invention of the early 1900s. They do not even actually filibuster anymore, they do not stand there and take any time, they just say, does not have 60 votes, its dead. Nope, that is not how the founders intended it to work. It needs to go.
